About Kalpa

My tutoring and teaching background:

I have an amazing journey during the past 8 years of experience tutoring and mentoring students. It started with two years as an SAT instructor and private tutor for high school students through Revolution Prep in San Francisco. At that time, I helped many high schoolers dramatically increase their score during my time with Revolution Prep. Later, during my master's degree career, I tutored for the Athletic Department at Wake Forest University, where I worked with students at a variety of abilities. I tutored "Learning to Learn" and "Introduction to Psychology" for incoming college freshman. Since finishing my master's degree, I have continued tutoring writing, test preparation, and research design through SPSS.

My educational background:

As a National Merit Scholar, I earned two bachelor's degrees from the University of California, at Los Angeles: a B.S. in Psychobiology and a B.A. in English Literature. After college, I honed in on research in experimental psychology. After two exciting and enriching years at Stanford University, I moved across the country to pursue my Master's degree in research psychology at Wake Forest University, where I was supported by a full-tuition scholarship. My thesis focussed on longitudinal change in autonomy and parent-child closeness among a sample of Asian-American high school students.

My philosophy:

Every student is unique, blessed with a singular learning style and way of seeing the world. With my background in academic and research psychology, I believe I am well-equipped to tap into the style, preferences, and ways of seeing the world that make each student who they are. I believe in active listening and dynamic tutoring. You can find me drawing and diagramming on a piece of paper or using as many metaphors or real-life examples as necessary to make a concept come alive.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

As a National Merit Scholar at UCLA, I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature (one of my double majors). I read and studied the great masters of English and American Literature in concentrated depth and detail; in addition I produced many papers analyzing and interpreting those great works. My GPA was an "A" average at UCLA for my English Major.

I have a passion for literature, writing, and the English language. Combined with my philosophy of tailoring each tutoring session to match the individual's learning style, I believe I can help you improve in English!

Psychology

I have an M.A. in research psychology. I have taken graduate level coursework in all major sub-disciplines of psychology as well as conducted my own empirical research on adolescent development. Psychology is my passion, and I love to communicate the concepts of this wonderful field!

SAT Reading

I have extensive experience tutoring high school students for the SAT exam. I spent two years working with a prominent test prep company; there I taught SAT preparation in both the classroom and through one-on-one tutoring. I have a strong grasp on what critical reading strategies help a test-taker maximize their score. I helped improve one test-taker's score by as much as 700 points through our tutoring.
