About Madeline

*Notice* In instances of financial hardship, I offer discounted tutoring for selected subjects in math (calculus and above) and physics (AP physics and above). Message me to request.

I am working on my BS in Physics with a math minor. I am a well-rounded student and have almost 6 years of experience tutoring a variety of subjects including high school English, freshman chemistry, physics, adult and elementary literacy, and math. My coursework included many art, literature, and philosophy classes, and I specifically enjoy helping with essay composition and introductory logic. Recently, I have tutored mostly statistics and physics.

My style of tutoring emphasizes complete understanding of underlying concepts. I ask leading questions to build confidence and encourage critical thinking, and will gladly make up problem sets to reinforce particular skills covered during a session. At the same time, I understand that many students are intimidated by many of the subjects I tutor, and making the motivations and methods of science and math approachable to a reluctant student is a first priority. Working with a wide variety of students, from 6 year olds who need assistance reaching grade level in reading, to gifted high school students, nontraditional adult students, and college kids struggling to make ends meet has also taught me how to adapt my style to suit different kinds of learners. I have been told that I am likable, easy to understand, and know my material well in comparison to many other area tutors - now is the chance for you to see for yourself! :)

I am new to this site so if you have any questions or would like recommendations, feel free to let me know!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

I was an undergraduate math minor. I have home school tutoring experience in the following areas:
-K12 program
-Alphabeta program
-developed an intensive summer curriculum for an international student in
Assisted LAUSD/Common Core student

Calculus

I earned a BS in Physics with a math minor, so I have a great combination of theoretical understanding and a solid working knowledge of calculus, one of the subjects I used the most in my degree coursework.

Differential Equations

I took differential equations and passed with an A as part of my math minor. The material is still fresh for me because I use solutions of differential equations often in physics problems. I particularly enjoy helping students at this level of math.

Linear Algebra

As part of my math minor, I tested out of Linear Algebra by receiving a perfect score on the final at my school. The 4 classes I took in Quantum Mechanics refined my understanding of the the techniques and important applications of linear algebra. I am especially happy to teach Linear Algebra to physics students who, like me, need the tools for their course of study but do not necessarily want to devote the time to taking the class.
