I worked in the educational field for 40 years. I began as an English teacher. I taught, language arts, writing, reading and English as a Second Language. My experience spans from kindergarten to graduate students. I have taught in summer schools and I have tutored extensively. There is nothing as exciting as helping someone learn something or working with someone as they improve their skills. For 27 of those years I was an elementary principal in four different and varied settings.
Being an elementary principal gave me the daily opportunity to observe teachers and to stay abreast with new methods and approaches. This was one of my favorite tasks in this position. I enjoyed watching students learn and interact with each other and their teachers. I am a firm believer that the teacher, the student and the parent working together will maximize student achievement.
I believe that I would be an outstanding tutor due to the diversity and variety of educational settings in which I have been privileged to work. I have been trained in differentiated instruction and believe in providing each student the opportunity to grow from where they are rather than from where they are expected to be. As an African American with a working knowledge of Spanish I have the sensitivity and ability to work with students from any background. I believe that students must like and trust their teacher in order to learn. I have proven to develop outstanding rapport with students and their parents over the years.
I will be in Palm Springs as a full time resident in late September. It would be an honor to work with students in any area of English language development, at any age. I am retired and have the time flexibility and the drive and focus to be of great help to those that are in need of extra support, of for those searching for enrichment options. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a retired English teacher and elementary principal. I believe that students learn best if we meet them where they are and differentiate according to their individual needs. As a principal we worked very diligently to make sure that students would be successful in the world of work. I also chaired many hiring committees and composed questions, wrote job descriptions and made decisions regarding whether or not candidates were a match for the available position.
I am a retired language arts teacher and principal. I have worked in elementary schools as a principal for 27 years and am very well versed in curriculum and teaching methods. Students learn best when their needs are met, they feel secure and nurtured. As a retired elementary principal I focused upon this area for many years.
My BA is in English. I hold permanent certification in English in New York State. I have taught language arts and was an elementary principal for 27 years during which I observed numerous teachers teaching through phonics.
During my successful career of 40 years in education, I was noted for my presentations, speeches and communication skills. I have a BA in English and an MA in Educational Administration. Both of these degrees required public presentations and public speaking skills.
I am a retired teacher and elementary principal. In both roles I worked closely with teachers and students regarding study skills that were effective and workable. I ran student workshops with the objective of helping students develop and/or refine their skills in this area. I also observed teachers while they worked on student study skills and provided assistance to instructional staff regarding related concepts.
