Hi! I am a retired teacher from Oregon. I taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade . I also taught second grade. I was a literacy coach and math coach at the district level for three years. I recieved Oregon's Celebrate Literacy Award in 2006 for my work assisting middle schoolers improve their reading and writing skills. I hold current Oregon and California Basic teaching certificates K-adult. I have a multiple subject credential plus a reading endorsement.

I have tutored students of all ages K-12 for the school district. I ran an after school reading enrichment and study skills program for five years at the district level.

My tutoring is focused on helping students of any age or experience gain mastery of challenging subject areas whether it be elementary, middle, high school, GED or CBEST preparation.

I believe everyone can learn if they have the right tools. Learning in your style is important and all of us have different styles of learning.

It's my job to find what learning style meets your needs. Learning can be fun, exciting and worthwhile. It shouldn't be worrisome or fretful. Success is our goal!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have worked with many students with ADD/ADHD over the years. Redirecting them is paramount in their success. This must be done with patience and understanding.

I have been trained in how to work with Asperger's students and others with Autism Spectrum disorders by the Multnomah County Educational Service district. I have had many Asperger's and autistic students in my classroom over the years. The were all successful and felt safe in my classroom environment.

I have had students with Autism mainstreamed into my classroom over all the 18 years I taught. I enjoyed watching them grow and face life's challenges. I have participated in many Autism trainings both by the school district and outside services.

The CBEST test is a measure of readiness for entry into the education field as well as many other areas of study. The test is a measure of general knowledge as well as a test of writing and math skills.
Communication through writing is extremely important to many fields. A good writer must be able to support a main idea, use complete sentences of various types and lengths and smooth transitions while using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation and keep the attention of the reader.
To teach writing I use a scoring rubric and have students writing daily in one or more of the genres. I focus strongly on expository writing as this is the type of writing most often used in the work place. I taught writing at all levels for 13 years.
Basic math skills are a must for this test. I focus on geometry, algebraic relationships, ratios and percentages as well as basic skills. I taught basic math for 13 years and was a Reynolds School District math coach.
I taught study skills, CBEST and Praxis prep as part of my student teacher supervision position at Warner Pacific College in Portland. I also have tutored several students who were preparing for post high school testing.

I have a background in the classics. I taught the history and literature of the Western World, American and English Literature. I have done extensive studies of classical literature and the Great Books of the Western World including Plato, Socrates, Niche. I also have done author studies on Dickens, Faulkner, Bronte, Twain, Fitzgerald and Austin. I have over thirty credit hours in the Humanities.

I was a reading intervention and literacy specialist for five years. I was a certified trainer of Auditory Discrimination in Depth now LIPS, a program which teaches students to use their senses to discriminate sounds and tools to use to see and write letters and words correctly. This program was designed for students who are Dyslexic/poor auditory and or sight learners. I understand frustrating and emotionally wearing Dyslexia can be and how it affects the student. There are many exercises and strategies that students can learn to overcome their difficulties.

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught 6th grade multiple subjects self-contained classes for 13 years in Oregon. I still hold a valid Oregon teaching certificate.

I am trained in teaching The Slingerland Approach to Reading and Writing, which has a strong printing and handwriting component. The Approach uses a three-approach system: seeing the letter, saying the letter name, writing the letter in the air, writing the letter on paper. It focuses on positives and works well with students who have dysgraphia.

I have also taught D'Nealian, Italic Cursive and other methods. I have taught handwriting and printing for over 18 years to all types of students.

Hard Of Hearing

Over the years I have had hard of hearing students mainstreamed into my classroom. I also spent time working as an instructional aide at Birney Elementry in Tacoma (school for the deaf). I used to know American sign, but am very rusty.

I have taught phonics in the classroom to students of all reading levels. I was a reading intervention teacher in middle school as well as literacy coach.

Study skills, test taking skills, and content knowledge are essential preparation for the PRAXIS. I have studied the composition of the PRAXIS, how it's scored and how the questions are weighted. There are many tools out there to help students take the PRAXIS successfully. Let me help you find the tools you need to be successful in this endeavor.

I graduated from Columbia Christian College. Study of religion and the Bible was intensive. I also work as a Coordinator of Children and Youth at a local church. I teach Bible study weekly to high school students. I have taken classes in comparative world religions. I am a certified teacher in Oregon and hold a Basic teaching certificate. I have 18 years of experience teaching a variety of subjects K-12.

Social Studies

I taught social studies for 18 years with an emphasis on five areas: Location, Place, Human Environment Interaction, Movement and Region.

Using these five themes of geography enables the student to create a detailed and focused study of any country or region of the world. I also taught and tutored American History.

Special Needs

I enjoy working with special needs students. I always had several students with various disabilities in my classroom: quadriplegics, autistic, special needs from severe to mild, vision impaired, and hearing impaired. I have been an active member of the instructional team. I have experience writing IEPS in subject areas and taking part in parent IEP meetings. I know how to design and adapt lessons for IEP students so they achieve success. I work with them patiently and calmly. Teaching toward their goals and ensuring their success is paramount.

Study Skills

I have taught study skills for 18 years with in the classroom. I also am trained in AVID.

I have been trained in Writing to Learn and Four Square Writing techniques. Both of these methods employ strategies which give children and teen tools for success. They are fun, methodical and give the students increased success in both their daily work and on state tests.
