About Michael

My passion for teaching comes from 10+ years of learning about life from peer mentors and teachers I look up to. My passion for helping others comes from the world around me. As a current 4.0 student, I am highly focused in my education. I am currently a part-time worker at Lowe's of San Bruno and I am a part-time tutor for Skyline College. I specialize in English and History. These are both subjects I am very passionate about and am consistently striving to help others in these areas when needed. My ultimate goal is to help students maximize their full potential by utilizing skills they already have and building upon skills they may not know they even possess.

I first started tutoring when I was younger. While getting paid under-the-table, I had to rely on word of mouth to increase my reputation and to help me get more tutoring jobs. Luckily, I had a great support system to help me along the way. Every mentor and friend I've met since, has helped shape me into the studious and responsible person I am today. Within the next year, I will be going off to a four-year university to continue my studies in English and come out on the other side with a degree. Then I plan on continuing my education even further with a Master's degree and eventually a Doctorate. This will help me to become the reputable professor I have always dreamed of being, whether that is at a community college or a public or private university, it won't matter as long as I'm teaching.

I will work tirelessly with students to perfect skills and build upon other skills with them on a deeper level. For each session, I hope to keep the student engaged and challenged, but never truly overwhelmed. However, it takes hard work and dedication to make it all happen. I make sure students understand this and ultimately if they are willing and ready, I will provide the skills and tools necessary for them to succeed. I specialize primarily in reading and writing, literature, grammar, public speaking, creative writing, and utilizing specific skills in English.

I know I may be younger than most tutors on here and am still working on gaining experience in tutoring, but with my mindset and skills, I can be exactly what it is that you are looking for in a tutor. I look forward to helping you achieve in your studies and ultimately, helping you to become more successful in the future in preparing for life's many challenges!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have taken numerous biblical studies courses in the past. My knowledge ranges from the Old Testament to the New Testament, with the New being my area of expertise. I also attend church every Sunday and go to bible studies every Wednesday night. I have also helped out with children's ministry in my church, where I have taught the bible in many different ways to children ages 4 and up. I also plan on taking more biblical studies courses in the future to better my knowledge on the subject.

English

Took Advanced courses (AP) in High School for both Language and Writing in English.
Currently taking Honors courses and am a T.A. For English 165 Advanced Composition at my college.
I have tutored others in writing, English language, and literature.
I am a double major in both English and Linguistics.
I am proficient when it comes to the subject of English and the language/literature of English.

Public Speaking

I have taken a few different types of interpersonal and intercultural communication courses which have a focus on speeches and public speaking. I have also taken several public speaking courses and have written speeches for peers and faculty in the past and continue to do so today. I also have experience with helping others overcome their fears of public speaking by utilizing certain skills and methods learned from my previous experiences in public speaking and communication courses.

Songwriting

I am currently working towards a minor in creative writing. I have taken several creative writing courses where I have been tasked in writing poems and songs. I don't just write the lyrics, I also focus on the song itself (it's quality, it's beats, etc.) I have always loved songwriting and I have a portfolio of several songs I have written to help back it up. I have taken time with my friends to compose lyrics for a song just for fun, but my friends and family end up truly enjoying the lyrics. I was even asked one time to join the national songwriting competition. I have participated in a similar competition at school and got 2nd place. Songwriting has always been a passion of mine.

Study Skills

I have taken several Study Skills courses in both high school and college. I served as a Study Skills mentor for my senior year of high school and continue to help in the Learning center at my current college. I have had lessons in Study Skills in the past and now have the knowledge to pass on what I know to future students/peers. I've assessed that the biggest issue when it comes to Study Skills is "drive" and organization, which I both struggled with in high school, but since then have excelled and succeeded and now help others to do the same.

Writing

I am an English major and a writing tutor as well as a supplemental instructor for the college I attend. I have passed several upper-level and lower-division English and Writing courses with an A. I have been a T.A. For writing instructors/professors for over 2 years now. I enjoy writing in my spare time/creative writing. My skill level ranges anywhere from elementary level writing to advanced college composition.
