About Yasser

I've taught college-level mathematics and computer science, and tutored while in graduate school, helping students to succeed. I really enjoy one-on-one individualized help to students. The reward is to see the student progress to actually enjoying and mastering the material, and doing very well in their classes. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Arabic

I am a native Arabic speaker and have studied Arabic language, grammar, rhetoric, literature, philosophy and poetry as part of my elementary, middle and high school curriculum, which adds up to about 12 years of instruction at 4-5 hours a week. I have a high school diploma from an Arabic-speaking country. I have tutored Arabic language and grammar to University of California professors and graduate students for several quarters.

C++

I took advanced courses in computer programming in C/C++ while in the graduate program at USC. I wrote a C compiler and a relational database management system in C/C++. As part of a course in operating systems, I wrote memory management Unix kernel modules in C.

Calculus

I have a Master's degree in mathematics, and I taught Calculus at UCLA and Pepperdine.

Computer Science

I was for 7 years a software engineer and technical consultant at Oracle. As a technical staff member on several large software programming assignments, I programmed in Java and PL/SQL. I taught Automata Theory at California State University, Dominguez Hills. I took foundational courses in computer science for my master's degree.

Differential Equations

I have passed all but dissertation requirements for a phd in applied mathematics at the University of California, Los Angeles. Part of the requirements to obtain the degree was to pass a competitive qualifying exam in differential equations by the second year in the program. I've also taken 9 graduate courses in differential equations at UCLA with a GPA of 3.7.

Electrical Engineering

I obtained a B.S. in electrical engineering from UCLA. I also obtained a graduate degree in electrical engineering from UCLA after passing PhD qualifying exams. The fields I am proficient in are communications, circuits, solid-state physics, electro-magnetics and optimization.

Finite Math

I obtained a master's in computer engineering from USC. Finite mathematics is a prerequisite subject to undergraduate and graduate courses. I took three courses in the subject; two were undergraduate and one was graduate-level.

French

I obtained a Baccaluareat Francais. My French language skill is native proficiency. I taught college-level French at UCLA as lead instructor. I spent most of my career in France.

Linear Algebra

I have completed a master of arts degree in mathematics at the University of California, Los Angeles. Part of the requirements to obtain the degree was to pass a competitive qualifying exam in analysis and linear algebra by the first year in the program. I've also taken an undergraduate course in linear algebra at UCLA with a grade of A.

Linux

I took advanced courses in Unix, the basis for Linux, programming while in the graduate program at USC. I wrote several portions of a Unix-based operating system as part of my graduate studies, including memory management, multi-threading and windowing modules. I have used Linux as a platform in work for 5+ years, and have used Linux at home exclusively for several years.

MATLAB

I used MATLAB throughout my graduate studies for over 5 years. Research for my peer-reviewed publication was done using MATLAB. I was a teaching assistant for quantitative finance at the UCLA graduate school of business administration where all assignments needed to be written in MATLAB, and helped students learn the platform.

Oracle

I was a software engineer and technical consultant at Oracle for seven years. For the first two years I did database administration. After that I worked on PL/SQL and Forms development for large clients. For the last two years at Oracle I mainly worked on Java jobs.

R

I took R programming on Coursera and obtained a certification. I've used R in other courses in data analysis. I was a teaching assistant for quantitative finance at the UCLA graduate school of business administration where R was extensively used. I was an intern at a quantitative finance company for a summer using R for research.

UNIX

I took advanced courses in Unix programming while in the graduate program at USC. I wrote several portions of a Unix-based operating system as part of my graduate studies, including memory management, multi-threading and windowing modules. I have used Linux (a Unix-based operating system) as a platform at work for 5+ years, and have used Linux at home exclusively for the many years.
