About Daniel

Greetings,

I am that teacher you had that loves her (or his or their) job so much that you never questioned why they chose a career in education. I left a promising career in the business world to get my M.A. and Ph.D. because I felt called to the classroom. And I have never once regretted it! I am an academic, but I like to think of myself as a professional thinker. My personal and professional studies have been steeped in the humanities, which means that I have mostly kept busy by reading masterworks and writing about their modern implications.

The bulk of my professional experience has come from teaching over the past 3 years at the high school level. The school that I currently work at is a private high school that focuses on kids with learning differences, primarily individuals with ADD and language-based learning challenges, such as dyslexia. I have created curriculum and taught the following subjects at the high school level: Government & Economics, US History, World History, Mythology, and Literature. In addition to this traditional experience, I have tutored adults and youth in shelter situations.

I also have experience tutoring and lecturing at the collegiate level. I have been invited to lecture at several different colleges on the following subjects: Humanistic & Transpersonal Psychology, Depth Psychology, Comparative Mythology, and Native American History. My goal is to be a full-time college professor in the field of religious studies, humanities, global studies, or psychology; therefore, I believe I would be a good fit for any college students in search of a tutor closely related to any of the subjects mentioned above.

Another service I am happy to provide is proofreading and editing. Starting way back in my undergraduate days I worked in a writing center proofing and editing essays. Of course, as a teacher I do the same sort of thing on a daily basis. During graduate school my colleagues and I would proof and edit for one another to make sure our work was up to standards. I am familiar with APA and MLA styles, and am willing to learn other college or university specific styles for bigger works, if the project seems interesting enough to me. I have had a few things published, but I would say that the bulk of my experience proofreading and editing has come from my academic career as a student and teacher.

I am originally from Minnesota, but moved out West for college. I have a Bachelor's degree in Humanities, with an emphasis in Psychology, from Sierra Nevada College. My Master's degree is in Mythological Studies and has an emphasis in Depth Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute. My Ph.D., which is also from Pacifica, is in Mythological Studies with an emphasis in Depth Psychology. My dissertation is available on ProQuest and is titled, "Peering Down the Bottomless Well: Myth in Thomas Mann's Joseph Tetralogy."

I believe that I am uniquely suited to help individuals who are looking to strengthen their critical thinking capabilities, alongside their reading and writing skills. I prefer working with learners that are high school aged or older, and am also open to working with people following passion projects.

If I sound like someone that can help you with something please don't hesitate to reach out. Thank you for your time.

In gratitude,

Dr. Daniel G.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I currently teach at Chartwell High School, which is a special needs private school that primarily focuses on kids with language-based learning challenges and ADHD. I enjoy teaching and tutoring students with these special needs because they are typically very strong verbal communicators and are creative. I have over two years of classroom experience working specifically with this population, in addition to participation in various conferences and lectures on learning differences.

American History

I have three years of teaching experience in American History at the high school level. I have also tutored students in the subject. I generally teach American history using Howard Zinn's famous book as an anchor text. I start with Zinn and then usually bring in other great thinkers-- Langston Hughes and James Baldwin for instance when focusing on African American history-- when I approach a particular unit.

Bible Studies

I am qualified to teach biblical studies since I earned my Ph.D. by submitting (and defending) a dissertation that focused on Genesis. My research primarily focused on "who" wrote the bible and "when" it was written, but also expanded into various exegetical conversations that were all based in the foundational scriptures. I can teach or tutor individuals on the specifics of the bible and its traditions, from multiple traditions --Islamic, Christian, Jewish-- as well.

Dyslexia

I currently teach at a special needs private school that caters to kids with language-based learning challenges, such as dyslexia. I thoroughly enjoy teaching and tutoring dyslexic students, and I have over two years of classroom experience working with dyslexic learners. In addition, I have participated in a teacher training institute that focused entirely on the dyslexic brain and what accommodations and strategies should be employed while working with dyslexic learners.

Government & Politics

I have two years of teaching experience in Government and Politics at the high school level. I have also taken a personal liking to the subject area. One unit that I have taught that goes particularly well is that on propaganda and persuasion techniques. I task students with deconstructing various pieces of media and encourage them to mine them for their propaganda and persuasion implications; oftentimes students emerge from this unit far more aware and are grateful for it.

Literature

I have several years teaching experience in the humanities and am a published author. I have also tutored students with language-based reading/writing challenges. I also have written many papers and a dissertation, all of which were hermeneutically focused. My dissertation primarily focused on the literature of Thomas Mann and its connection to various mythological traditions.

Proofreading

I have several years teaching experience in the humanities and am a published author. I have also tutored students with language-based reading/writing challenges. I have proofread multiple manuscripts, several of which that have been published. I also have written many papers and a dissertation, which took countless hours of proofreading.

Reading

I have several years teaching experience in the humanities. I have also tutored students with language-based reading challenges. I have proofread multiple manuscripts, several of which that have been published. I also have written many papers and a dissertation, which took countless hours of proofreading. I read constantly and enjoy it.

Religion

I have an M.A. and Ph.D. in a subject that focuses greatly on religious history, texts, and rituals. I have taken graduate courses on living Buddhist traditions, Hindu traditions, Jewish traditions, Christian traditions, Islamic traditions, African and African Diaspora traditions, Native American traditions, and many more. As for traditions that are no longer generally practiced--such as Greco-Roman, Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Zoroastrian, etcetera--I am also well versed in.

Social Studies

I am currently a high school educator that teaches the following course load: Mythology, World History, Economics & Government 1, Economics & Government 2, and US History. I have a bachelor's degree in Humanities, and a M.A. and Ph.D. in Mythological studies. I am very confident teaching and tutoring all subjects under the umbrella of social studies.

World History

I have significant teaching experience in World History at the high school level. I have also tutored students in the subject. I generally teach World history by taking a week focusing on the limitations of such study-- teach a class that supposedly touches on all of the world's history is simply impossible! Units of study that have been particularly meaningful for kids (High Schoolers I have taught) focused on the rise of the world's major religious traditions. The kids really enjoy learning about how history, economics, geography, and religion all interact. Plus, it helps people feel more connected to groups outside of their own religious persuasion in our tumultuous times.

Writing

I have several years teaching experience in the humanities and am a published author. I have also tutored students with language-based writing challenges. I have proofread multiple manuscripts, several of which that have been published. I also have written many papers and a dissertation. I oftentimes tutor writing through google documents, as I find it remarkably easy and students get to see edits instantaneously.
