Bio

I am a part time professional plein aire painter, and full time Special Education Teacher (mild/mod) K-12 multiple subjects. I have taught large classroom sizes to individual pullout RSP and private tutoring. I mainly specialize in Specific Learning Disorders but have some experience with higher functioning autism as well.
My philosophy on education is that less is more. In other words; "quality not quantity" is my mantra. I teach less standards to thereby insure 'mastery' of each standard....

My philosophy on education is that less is more. In other words; "quality not quantity" is my mantra. I teach less standards to thereby insure 'mastery' of each standard. Pushing is entirely up to the students frustration level and willingness, but nonetheless a paramount directive in achieving academic success.
I use multisensory lessons, games, and fun to build confidence in the student, although careful data recording on baselines and progress must be quantified frequently (assessments). In summary, individual tutoring is the highest or 'biggest bang for the buck' reward for all parties engaged in the students educational future and success.

I teach each step in a linear sequence to mastery. Being artistic and creative allows me to instinctively diagnose where a student has weaknesses in internalizing a concept. I use physical gross motor and memory synthesized to link to long term rote skill; for example orally reciting a concept while playing ball, 4-square, dancing, skipping etc., to internalize.

"There's always many ways to reach a destination," lets do it the fun and easy way when your ready for a fresh new approach to academics. Whether your looking to become more skillful as an artist or trying to break through a mental roadblock in Math, or even just learning how to write clear academic papers, reach out to me at and lets discuss your needs.

Drawing,

Drawing

Drawing is perhaps my strongest artistic skill. I specialize in life drawing, and practice my skill weekly during life draw sessions at the Pacific Grove (CA.) art center. There I draw from live models and have sold works at the art center. I can do portraits in any medium, but generally I prefer to life draw in charcoal and pastels. In addition to my work as a painter I include prior submission. First and foremost, I earned a B.A. in studio art from San Jose State Univ., CA., 1993 and a AA in studio art from Monterey Peninsula College, CA., 1992. I received an art scholarship and award from Monterey's Central Coast Art Association '92. I received best of show from the Old Monterey Plein Aire festival '03 and operated a studio gallery in Monterey '92-'94. I conducted art lessons/tutoring while running my art business. Currently I am a part time professional plein aire painter during weekends and summer selling half a dozen paintings.

Great online sessions!

Bernie is a very knowledgeable and thoughtful tutor. His style allows you to take your notes and apply it coherently to analysis, compare/contrast, essays, etc; he is much more then a flash card tutor... His guidance has eased A LOT of the stress that comes with advance college courses. The online session option is convenient and beneficial. Bernie is A++
