About Richard

A perpetual desire to know and understand through an unending learning experience is for me what makes life interesting. My enjoyment from teaching comes from the reward of sharing this knowledge in a way that makes it just as interesting to others.

I enjoy working with students, especially 1-on-1, and am noted for having a very positive connection and inspirational influence on them. Many parents have reported remarkable turnarounds in the academic achievements of my students, from which I derive much satisfaction. I work well with students of all ages and strive to make their learning experience enjoyable.

My teaching approach is tailored to the student’s needs, and includes periodic assessments of the student’s progress. I encourage students to tell me where they believe they have weaknesses, gaps in understanding or misconceptions, to help focus on the roots of their current problems. I use a very relaxed and patient approach customized to each student that starts with working on these problem areas to clearly explain the concepts so they can really understand. Once they’ve got it, they make immediate progress.

I continually tie exercises together so students can see the connections between one topic and the next in their classwork. The focus is on explaining the concepts so the students can understand what they are doing, rather than just knowing how to do it. My philosophy is that the more you do, rather than just listen to me, the more successful you will be. I provide the understanding and a roadmap to follow, but by encouraging participation by the students, students take a more active role in their learning experience. Feedback from both the students and their parents is encouraged as an important part of providing the best possible help for the student.

My previous tutoring experience has covered over 5 years working one-on-one with students taking classes in physics, mathematics (geometry, algebra through calculus and differential equations), and general science. A major part of that time has been devoted to high school AP students taking classes in calculus, statistics and physics. This has also included preparation for SAT exams. I have also assisted college students taking math (calculus and differential equations) and physics courses while pursuing their science and engineering degrees. I gained a reputation as one of the best advanced mathematics and science instructors, preferentially requested by students, where I taught.

While a graduate student in geophysics I ran evening group study sessions in the athletics department where I provided individual instruction as needed in math and physics (for intro and upper-division courses) for student athletes majoring in science and engineering. In the Geophysics Dept. I also taught the geophysics lab courses, and was a teaching assistant for geophysics and geochemistry lectures.

I can travel up to about 20 miles to work with students at home or other quiet public place or I can work with them online, and am flexible about cancellation notices if they are given at least 12 hours in advance of a session.

I look forward to meeting you and helping you realize success in your educational goals.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
