About Mel

Having had tutors throughout my academic career, I understand the huge impact a tutor can make in a student's life. A great tutor not only helps a student feel more CONFIDENT about their study habits, but also challenges them to CONTINUE LEARNING about subjects that interest them.

I'm MEL and I'd love to work with you and your family! I have over 7+ YEARS of private TUTORING EXPERIENCE in subjects such as MATH, ENGLISH, STUDY SKILLS, and TEST PREP from PRE-K through COLLEGE. I spent this past summer teaching an SAT READING boot camp in addition to various elementary reading classes :)

For students getting ready to APPLY TO COLLEGE, I offer help with SAT PREP, ACT PREP, COLLEGE ESSAY WRITING, SCHEDULING, etc. Junior and senior year can be stressful, but it doesn't have to be with planning. I like introducing my students to the concepts of mindfulness and meditation in order to decrease anxiety during testing. These concepts along with unique test-taking strategies have helped my students increase their SAT scores by over 250-300 points!

As an early adopter of TECHNOLOGY, I can also helps students learn shortcuts for MICROSOFT OFFICE (WORD, EXCEL, POWERPOINT), APPLE related programs (PAGES, NUMBERS), and various SOCIAL MEDIA (FACEBOOK, TWITTER, INSTAGRAM, PINTEREST).

I'm a huge SUPPORTER of CRITICAL THINKING coupled with DISCIPLINED STUDY HABITS. I think it's important for students to be able to ask questions and voice their opinions, but at the same time, students must be willing to put in the time to learn new subjects and hobbies.

I'm also very keen on creating INDIVIDUALIZED SCHEDULES for my students who want to track their progress and ACHIEVE SUCCESS.

If you think we may be a great fit, feel free to contact me. I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I've privately tutored for over 10+ years. I've tutored numerous students in Pre Algebra, Algebra 1/2, and SAT Math.

Macintosh

I have owned a Macintosh computer for over 4 years now, and I used it heavily in college. Currently, I use the video production part of the Mac because I am a part-time production assistant. I know how to navigate the OS X system, add/delete programs, and I know how to utilize the Mac-made programs such as iWork (Keynote, Pages, Numbers), iMovie, Photo Booth, etc. In addition, I'm a big tech person so I know how to add apps, work social media, and update my computer.

Microsoft Windows

I have used Microsoft Windows for over 12 years. I have used Word, Excel, and PowerPoint many times for school projects and work-related projects. I currently use the Mac version of the Microsoft Suite so I know how to deal with it on non-Mac and Mac computers. I can navigate the operating system, add/delete programs, arrange files, etc. I also know the shortcut keys.

SAT Reading

Helps raise students' scores by 250-300 points solely on the Reading section. Teaches simple reading comprehension SAT strategies that make the SAT testing process more manageable.

Study Skills

As a working professional, I use both web and print calendars to keep me up-to-date on on various tasks. I use Google Calendar, Sunrise, and various apps to track what I've completed and what other tasks I need to complete. I also help manage calendars for various directors and producers.

As a graduate of UC Berkeley, not only did I have a full course load each semester, but I also worked part-time at the law library and actively participated in club organizations. I utilized my study skills by allocating time each Sunday to plan for the following week and to determine what priorities were of highest importance. Doing this allowed me to evenly distribute my time without stress.

As a high school senior, I took 5 AP classes, managed the school newspaper and Future Business Leaders of America, and played piano competitively. I was able to create a cohesive schedule each week so I'd be able to attend to all of my activities.

Video Production

As a part-time production assistant, I have to edit video footage using editing software such as iMovie and Final Cut Pro. I've been editing using these programs for over 3 years now, and I understand how to use these programs because I have to use them for my job.

Writing

I have exepreince with College English, Essay Research & Preparation, and Writing.
