About Heidi

Hi! Thank you for visiting my profile.

I have a Master's in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies (MIIS) at Monterey. I also have a double BA in Psychology and Linguistics from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Further, I lived and worked in Mexico for one year and consider myself fluent in Spanish. My native language is American English and I have lived in California all of my life, except for my year abroad!

Over these past 10 years, I have taught English/ESL to native and non-native speakers of various ages and I feel comfortable working with any age. I can teach English to complete beginners to very advanced language users. I have experience helping students in any part of the writing process, including research. I am very familiar with APA and MLA.

Currently, I work at a community college where I teach academic reading and writing. As such, I am very capable in assisting with report writing, research, essay writing, literature analysis, etc.

To give you an idea of my professional experience, here are the places I have worked: UCSD Early Education Outreach Program, Kaplan International, ELS Language Centers, UC Berkeley Extension, UC Irvine Continuing Education, and Irvine Valley College. I also have taught and/or tutored SAT Writing, TOEFL iBT, IELTS, and TOEIC. Some of my specialties are writing, grammar, speaking and pronunciation. I also enjoy teaching literacy, phonics, and vocabulary. Additionally, I've worked with business professionals and STEM major students.

I am a multi-faceted tutor who understands the diverse needs of clients with English language goals. I create lessons in English or ESL for everyday life, school, work, tests, college applications, or personal needs. I will help you meet your goals! I enjoy getting to know my clients so that the lessons I create are the right fit for them. I also think it's incredibly important to build a client's confidence and help him or her develop their own voice in the language. I consider myself a very patient, adaptable, supportive, and encouraging teacher who meets the needs of my clients. I am always accessible to you outside of our lesson in case you have additional questions or seek other resources.

Please feel free to ask me any questions. Thank you for your time.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have been teaching ESL since 2009. Before this, I worked with bilingual students in Southern California. I also have my Master's in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. I have taught professional, academic, vacation, and everyday English.

Grammar

My interest in grammar began in high school when I took AP Literature and AP English Language and Composition. In college I studied Linguistics and Psychology. Since then I have studied grammar extensively in my Master's program and as a result of teaching academic reading and writing for almost 7 years now.

IELTS

I have a Master's in TESOL and have been teaching since 2009. While I was at Kaplan International in Berkeley, Ca, I gave a class in IELTS writing/grammar. Since then, I have also included IELTS vocabulary and writing into my teaching. I have tutored one student in IELTS. I feel as though I know the test very well, much like TOEFL.

Proofreading

My interest in writing and proofreading began in high school when I took AP Literature and AP English Language and Composition. In college I studied Linguistics and Psychology. For the past 7 years, I have been proofreading and giving writing feedback to a variety of individuals; for example, students creating personal statements, professionals working on a cover letter, and other various reports or essays to be submitted.

TOEFL

Since 2010, I have taught two TOEFL courses and also tutored many students preparing for the TOEFL. I will create lessons specific to the portions of the test that you want to take. Many of my students have want to develop vocabulary, improve pronunciation and grammar, and learn the correct formatting for their writing and speaking.

Vocabulary

I have taught vocabulary courses for completely beginners, specialized sciences, test preparation, and so on. I really enjoy teaching the connection between vocabulary and grammar, as well as techniques on how to improve vocabulary. I consider myself a versatile tutor who will find out your needs then design lessons on the type of vocabulary you are aiming to learn, ranging from informal to formal register.

Writing

My interest in writing began in high school when I took AP Literature and AP English Language and Composition. In college I studied Linguistics and Psychology. Since then I have studied grammar extensively in my Master's program and as a result of teaching academic reading and writing for almost 7 years now. I have taught seminars on creative writing and classes specific to creating personal statements, as well as cover letters and resumes. Aside from this, I have worked at a graduate writing center and have taught writing courses for years. I love teaching writing.
