About Jess

Hello Parents of Students Struggling in School.

Thanks you for taking the time to read about my tutoring services.

I am a Certified Barton Tutor and Dyslexia Screener as of 2016. I am passionate about helping people who struggle because of learning disabilities, such as Dyslexia, Dysgraphia and Dyscalculia. I use several Orton-Gillingham based programs that teach students how to read well, using a multi-sensory approach; it incorporates spelling and grammar alongside of reading. For math I help students from kindergarten to adulthood. I can also refer you to an affordable learning disability assessor, to help determine the best plan of action for your child.

Since 2010 I have worked with students in K-6th to develop skills they have not mastered in school. We work on the areas that they need help using different methods than taught in school, such as; playing games, phonemic awareness, reading together or learning stories. I try to find out what interests the students have and teach to their interests, because they are more likely to retain the information, that way.

I have taught English classes to elementary and middle school homeschool and private school students since 2013. Subjects include English composition, essay writing. I also teach Touch Math, which is multi-sensory math instruction. I teach students differently than the way they learning school and they usually pick it up quicker.

My Education and Experience:

I majored in Education at UNLV. I began teaching students in private school all academic subjects from 5th grade to 10th grade in 2010. Since 2011, I have attended various classes for students with Learning Disabilities and have been trained personally by Susan Barton, the Creator of the Barton Reading and Spelling System. I began tutoring students with learning disabilities in 2012.

Tutoring:
Reading and Selling System for Auditory Processing Delayed, Dyslexic and LD Students:
I tutor students, One on One, from Kindergarten and up. There are 10 levels in the Orton-Gillingham program I use and we sequentially work through each level. If a student struggles more in one area we will focus more in that area and the areas where they excel, we move along quickly. I always praise them often. With younger student, we play a lot of games along the way. Poor memory is often an issue for dyslexic students so a minimum of 2 sessions per week in imperative for their success.

Math Tutoring for Students with Dyscalculia or similar Learning Disabilities:
I use a combination of tools which are hand on and easier for students with dyscalculia to remember how to add, subtract, multiply, divide and write numbers in the correct direction. We use hands on methods, stories, games and relevant math to help them understand and enjoy math. The math program is not as intense and can be taught once a week.

Writing Skills for all students, especially those with Dysgraphia:
We focus on directionality, neatness and consistency in size of letters. We can look at alternate modes of writing to make the experience of writing more enjoyable. For older students, we can work on parts of speech, sentence structure and essay writing.

*If student struggle in multiple areas we can discuss various tutoring options.

Other Information:
I tutor from my home on the border of Santa Ana/Orange right by the Orange Crush. We are opening an office August 2016 in Costa Mesa or If you wish for someone to travel to you, there is an additional $25 for travel time. Rate varies from $35-65/hr based on tutor experience.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping your child become successful, confident and see the world in a whole different light!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I use a multi-sensory approach to teaching students math, reading, spelling and writing. We switch from hands on (writing on paper, dry erase board, sand/shaving cream, etc.), to reading, and listening frequently, to keep the students attention. They may hold a stress ball, play with play dough, kick a step stool or sitting on an exercise ball to release pent up energy. Specific accommodations are provided based on the child's needs.

Dyslexia

Since 2011, I have taken over 60 hours of Dyslexia classes. I have been trained personally by Susan Barton, the Creator of the Barton Reading and Spelling System. I have been tutoring students with learning disabilities such as Dyslexia, Dyscalculia and Dysgraphia since 2012. I have also given lectures on Dyslexia to families who suspect their children might have Dyslexia.

English

I have been teaching English to private schools, charter school and homeschool students since 2010. I began tutoring students in English since 2012.

Handwriting

I tutor students who struggle with writing using Barton, an Orton Gillingham program and Handwriting Without Tears. I have been working with students who have trouble writing in varying degrees since 2009. Some of my students prefer learning to write in script and some using print. I can teach them in one or both writing styles.

Phonics

I use a Phonics method for teaching reading, spelling and writing to my students by focusing on the learners' phonemic awareness—the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate phonemes—using proven, systematic Orton-Gillingham methods.

Reading

I love to write. It has always come naturally to me. I realize that is not the case for everyone. I like to simplify Engilsh for students so they can find joy in writing, as well.
I have been teaching English classes to private school students, including several Excellence in Writing Classes, since 2013, as well as tutoring students in phenomic awareness, proper sentence structure, parts of speach, English composition, essay writing and more since 2012. I have an extensive Orton-Gillingham program I use for reading and writing, if we find that would be helpful, I am happy to implement that as well.

Special Needs

I work with students with special needs, such as Learning Disabilities, ADD or ADHD, sensory and auditory processing disorder, anxiety, phobias, communication disorders, physical disabilities, developmental disabilities and the like.
I work towards finding their strengths and building their self esteem while using multi-sensory approaches to teach them how to read, write, spell or do math.

Study Skills

I teach students how to organize their educational lives using color coding. It is imperative to teach them a system that is easy to use continually at home and at school. Often time management is a necessary component to work on as well.

Writing

I majored in Education and minored in History in college. I am currently back in school taking Entrepreneur classes.
Since 2011, I have taken over 80 hours of continuing education classes in the areas of English, General Education and Learning Disabilities.
I have been teaching privates school, charter school and homeschool students since 2010
I began tutoring students in 2012.
