About Miguel

I am a fourth year medical student at UC Irvine School of Medicine and just received an MBA at the Paul Merage School of Business. I started volunteering my time as a tutor when I was in middle school by helping elementary students that were struggling in reading, writing, and math. This is when I realized that I loved teaching. I continued to tutor K-6 students all throughout high school and grew very comfortable working with this age group. I then attended UCLA, where I majored in Physiological Science. For two years, I worked as a tutor and mentor at an after school program in Downtown Los Angeles. I helped elementary and middle school children with homework, reading, writing, and math and also helping them set a strong academic foundation for when they attend college. For the last two years at UCLA, I tutored biology to undergraduate students. This was one of my favorite experiences since I was teaching what I love most: science. I met with students twice per week, prepared handouts, gave practice questions, and much more to ensure that they were prepared for their exams. I learned how to adjust my teaching techniques in order to accommodate the diverse learning styles of students. Students were excited to see that they were getting A’s on exams and understanding their class material.
When I started medical school at UC Irvine School of Medicine, I wanted to continue tutoring. For this reason, I tutored medical students in physiology, anatomy, pathology, microbiology, and pharmacology. It was very exciting to work with graduate students and apply my experience as a tutor to provide the best services to my students. I feel extremely comfortable working with students from all age groups. I can help with science, math, and even Spanish. I am a native Spanish speaker, took Spanish grammar classes in high school, and scored a 5 on the AP Spanish test. I have experience with medical Spanish and can help you learn or improve your Spanish-speaking skills. Overall, I enjoy creating new and creative ways of explaining topics and developing new study skills since every student has a unique learning style. Over the years, I learned to value the importance of an education, and for this reason, commit to helping you achieve your academic goals. I am friendly, enthusiastic, and very motivating, which will help create a welcoming and fun learning environment. Furthermore, I can provide mentorship and any help with organization skills, study techniques, and even preparing for college. I am excited and look forward to working with you to help you succeed.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I began tutoring K-8 students when I was in middle school; I assisted them with reading, math, and completing their homework. I continued to tutor K-6 students--in the same subjects--throughout high school and became very comfortable working with this age group. I then attended UCLA, where I worked as a tutor and mentor for elementary and middle school children at an after school program for two years. In addition to helping the students with reading, writing, and math, I helped them prepare for college by providing resources and motivation in order to build a strong academic foundation.

Elementary (K-6th)

I began tutoring K-6 students when I was in middle school; I assisted them with reading, math, and completing their homework. Elementary Math

I began tutoring K-6 students when I was in middle school; I assisted them with reading, math, and completing their homework. MCAT

I am qualified to tutor for the MCAT since I took the exam as a medical school application requirement and have experience for strategies to perform well on the exam. I have the expertise in the subjects to be able to explain concepts, ranging from physical to biological science. I understand that the MCAT is an intimidating and monumental step in preparing for medical school, but I have learned that one of the best strategies to excel is to complete practice questions and exams. Having taken several standardized exams before and during medical school has equipped me with various study techniques that I can recommend and tailor towards different learning styles.

Pharmacology

I am qualified to tutor pharmacology because I have taken a year-long pharmacology course during my medical school training. I have also excelled in two standardized exams that test pharmacology knowledge: NBME Basic Science: Pharmacology and the US Medical Licensing Exam Step 1. Lastly, I have spent 2 years in the clinical setting (clinics and hospital), where I have applied my pharmacology knowledge on patient treatment and medical management. Overall, I feel very comfortable with the material and enjoy teaching it by incorporating its application and utility.

Physiology

I majored in Physiological Science at UCLA and have several years of experience teaching physiology & anatomy to college and medical students. I am also available to tutor STEP 1 and STEP 2 (at a higher rate).

Spanish

I am a native Spanish speaker, took Spanish grammar classes in high school, and scored a 5 on the AP Spanish test.

Study Skills

Having a widespread background in tutoring services—ranging from elementary to graduate level—has given me the ability to work effectively and efficiently with any student. During my tutoring experience, I have prepared extensive handouts, administered practice quizzes, and utilized creative teaching styles (for example, developing mnemonics) to prepare students for their exams. I learned various teaching techniques in order to accommodate the diverse learning styles of students. I can provide mentorship and assistance with organization skills, study techniques, and college preparation.
