About Tammy

Helping others empower themselves through education has always been apart of my career goal and ultimate life purpose. As a college freshman at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), I immediately declared a major in Education and never turned back. Immediately after graduating with a Bachelors degree, I secured my first teaching job (High School English Teacher) and reenrolled at CSULB to earn a Single Subject Teaching Credential in English; there I studied English Language Arts, of course, as well as the theories and methodologies of teaching and learning. While continuing my teaching career, I later enrolled in Pepperdine University where I learned even more about educating others, continued to hone my skill set as an English Teacher and earn a Masters degree.

I have over 15 years experience working with students in one-on-one, small group and whole class settings in middle and high schools, as well as adult schools and at the university level. These experiences have allowed me to work with a diverse population of students ranging from those in the inner city to those attending private institutions and adults seeking help to fulfill deferred educational goals. As a highly qualified secondary English teacher, I have many resources to help ANY student at ANY ability level succeed.

Whether your tutoring needs are in reading, writing, speaking, grammar, phonetics, or test preparation, give me a call! I will exceed your expectations for academic support!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

My undergraduate degree is in Liberal Studies: Language Arts, a degree option for those pursuing a career in elementary education. In addition, I have passed the CBEST and CSET: Multiple Subjects. Lastly, I have tutored K-6 students as an employee of multiple Supplemental Education Support (SES) programs.

English

I am considered a HIGHLY QUALIFIED English Teacher by the standards set forth by the state of California and the No Child Left Behind Act. I hold a CA Single Subject Teaching Credential in English, have passed the English CSET exam in English and have taught English at the high school and collegiate level.

ESL/ESOL

I have experience instructing ESL at both the high school and collegiate level. I have training and a working knowledge of English 3D strategies from the ESL curriculum designed by a well known scholar and educational leader in the area of second language English instruction.

Grammar

As mentioned previously, I am a highly qualified California credentialed English teacher. To receive this designation from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC), it is necessary for me to have thoroughly studied and passed an exam, the CSET, that includes grammar. Lastly, as a general education and especially as a second language English teacher, I have written and delivered instruction on many grammar concepts.

Handwriting

My undergraduate studies were in the area of elementary education where I studied all aspects of the K-5 curriculum, including handwriting. I also have worked with students in special education programs who required instruction in handwriting, including how to properly grip a pen or pencil. To add, my personal handwriting skills are very strong.

Phonics

I am a highly trained and qualified English teacher with a California Clear Credential. I have worked as a literacy clinician teaching phonetics, reading and spelling to struggling students and students with learning disabilities utilizing the Lindamood-Bell Phoneme Sequencing Program, LiPS; I even have the complete LiPs instruction set. Lastly, I have passed the CSET: Multiple Subject Test (English Language Arts) and the CSET: English which includes the assessment of phonemic awareness.

Public Speaking

Public speaking is a skill that is covered in the Common Core standards and as an experienced and credentialed secondary classroom teacher, I have delivered instruction and modeled these skills for my students. From non-verbal to verbal traits to content, I am very knowledgeable about what it takes to successfully communicate publicly. My lessons in this area include but are not limited to elocution, enthusiasm, body language/gesticulation, and proper eye contact.

TOEFL

I am certified by Educational Testing Services (ETS) as a rater for the TOEFL Exam (Speaking section). I have worked with ELS at the University of La Verne as an ESL instructor.

Writing

As a highly qualified English-Language Arts teacher, I have training and experience identifying specific weaknesses in student writing, providing personalized strategies to overcome those weaknesses, as well as identifying and improving student strengths.
