Hi, I'm Julie, and I'm a word nerd! I specialize in English: reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, spelling, and composition. I also love math, and I can help with developing great habits in studying, memorization, problem-solving, and research. I can help you learn how to learn! Helping people is my reason for being.
Since 1990, my husband and I have owned our own computer-video-web design business, which gives me lots of opportunities to teach. I teach my customers to use their computers to perform tasks that are new to them, and I have conducted classes in groups and one-on-one, teaching people how to use programs we have written.
As a web designer, I write copy for websites, and I also assist my customers with writing their own copy. I am fascinated by language. It may sound strange, but I love spelling and proofreading, so I help my customers with their writing as a human spelling and grammar checker!
My B.A. is in Linguistics (the study of language), and I spent a year of post-graduate work in Speech Therapy. Before we had our business, I had a job as a grammarian at a speech-recognition software company. They paid me to be a word nerd, and I loved it. I also used to tutor children in an after-school program. I worked with students from grades 1-6, in all skill levels, and in all subjects. It was fun, and I loved seeing their progress.
My tutoring methods are based on my belief that with kindness, creativity, and persistence, a person can learn anything. Work smarter, not harder! Hi, I'm Julie, and I'm a word nerd! I specialize in English: reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, … Read more
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Although it has been quite a few years, I received a score of 650 on the verbal portion of my SAT, with a combined score of 1300. I have continued to enjoy reading and writing throughout my adult years, to the extent that I scored 100% on each of WyzAnt's SAT Reading and Writing tests, and 100% on the WyzAnt ACT Reading test.
A lifelong love of learning gives me a strong foundation for teaching a variety of subjects. In my school days, I got excellent grades, and I continue as an adult to enjoy challenging my mind.
I have always enjoyed teaching others, and helping them to reach their full potential. My parents credit me with teaching my younger brother to read. I was 5 years old at the time!
As an adult, I have had many teaching opportunities. I worked for a tutoring company for approximately a year. In this job I tutored children in grades one through six, in any subject with which they needed help, on a one-on-one basis. The job was a lot of fun, and very fulfilling. I really enjoyed seeing the comprehension on their faces, and seeing improvement on their report cards.
I received 100% on WyzAnt's tests in Elementary Math, Reading, Writing, and Grammar.
SAT Qualifications: Although it has been a few years, I received a score of 650 on the verbal portion of my SAT, with a combined score of 1300. I have continued to enjoy reading and writing throughout my adult years, to the extent that I scored 100% on each of WyzAnt's SAT Reading and Writing tests.
English Qualifications: I also excelled in high school AP English, as well as a composition course in college.
I have taught ESL at various times in my life to both students and adults. I had a part-time job teaching ESL to groups of adults at different businesses in the area.
My bachelor's degree is in Linguistics, and at college I took ESL courses and other pertinent courses. I learned a lot about pronunciation, and how we shape our mouths to produce various sounds. This is helpful in ESL, because a great deal of speaking a language -- and being understood -- comes down to pronunciation.
I have always been interested in helping people with the English language, and grammar is one of my favorite subjects. I had a job as a Grammarian at a company that made speech recognition software. My bachelor's degree is in Linguistics (the study of language). I earned 100% scores on all of WyzAnt's language tests: reading, grammar, writing, SAT verbal, ACT verbal.
I started taking guitar lessons when I was nine years old, and took lessons through age 15. My lessons were in technique in chords and strumming, and I also learned to play classical acoustic guitar. I had a broken finger at one point, so for those weeks my teacher taught me music theory, and more advanced topics such as key signatures.
As an adult I continue to enjoy playing guitar. I recently led two community sing-alongs where the only instruments were my guitar and my voice!
I am able to teach the classical method using Frederick Noad's books, which are a very enjoyable way for a beginner to learn. It's the way I learned. Mr. Noad takes you from very basic but beautiful pieces through increasingly challenging ones, and each one teaches a different skill or technique. My own progress has taken me well into his second book, which involves second position fretwork and contrapuntal music!
I can teach a student how to read music, both by note and by chord, including many different strumming and plucking techniques. Certain techniques sound better with certain songs, so it's good to have a large repertoire to draw from. I can also provide little extras that a student can add to liven up a song, such as hammering, pulling off, and fun chord progressions.
I believe a beginning or intermediate guitar student would enjoy increasing their skills and love of guitar with me!
Although it has been a few years, I received a score of 650 on the verbal portion of my SAT, with a combined score of 1300. I have continued to enjoy reading and writing throughout my adult years, to the extent that I scored 100% on each of WyzAnt's SAT Reading and Writing tests.
At Pomona Reading Clinic, I trained kids in elementary school how to look for clues to figure out answers. Some other skills I taught are developing a positive outlook about learning, breaking a task into manageable chunks, and using mnemonic devices as memory aids. For example, when a student needed to learn the geography of South America, I showed her how to create a silly sentence whose letters started with each country's first initial.
At the Pomona Boys and Girls Club I was a volunteer afterschool tutor for a sixth-grader and a fourth-grader. I taught them how to use the computer as a research tool. I also assisted them in developing confidence by breaking large tasks into smaller ones, and using rewards to motivate themselves to keep going. For instance, a student would set herself this task and reward: if I can read and understand this page in my science book, I can play a computer game for five minutes.
In my business, I have trained many adults to use their computers more effectively, and to troubleshoot computer problems. The most useful skills I have helped them develop are patience, persistence, and optimism. I train them by modeling a very patient and persistent attitude, showing them how much fun it can be to remain curious and upbeat. I have the student sit at the computer rather than just watching me. Before they know it, they have learned these new skills and are applying them with great results.
I think my tutoring could be of great benefit to a student who is looking to build a good set of study skills. These great tools are an investment that will benefit a person in schoolwork, on tests, and throughout a life of learning.
I enjoy writing, and consider clear communication to be one of my strengths. In over 20 years of business as a web designer and videographer, I have had extensive experience writing website content and video scripts.
In school I got straight A's in all my composition courses, including an advanced placement English course. I scored 650 on the SAT verbal portion. More recently, I scored 100% on all of WyzAnt's language tests.
