I have a strong passion for empowering students to push past obstacles to find their place in higher education. My experience has been strongest in education reform and college affordability as well as the processes involved with matriculation. There is nothing that I enjoy more than assisting a student then watching them move on to the next phase of life with self-determination and confidence.
For the last 8 years, I have served as a college counselor and grade level chair at a public charter school, which required a high degree of knowledge about processes for beginning their life in higher education. This included college and financial aid applications, the collaborative tailoring of student's college lists to find the right fit, as well as playing an essential role in ensuring that they were on schedule to get the results they wanted, both academically and financially.
I have a familiarity with reviewing countless competitive college essays and excel at proofreading and helping students convey their stories to colleges. I am trained through the Princeton Review and instituted the curriculum for Juniors and Seniors.
I coached cross country for 3 years and am an avid runner.
My style of tutoring is relaxed and easygoing, but in the world of college access, we must take things seriously. That means that if you fulfill your responsibilities, I can maximize your chances of getting into the school you want with a little stress and a lot of encouragement. It's a competitive environment, but I know the ins and outs, have good contacts with colleges and think you will be happy you chose me as your college counselor. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As somebody who has directed students into colleges that will bring out the best in their academic abilities, and following up with them on a personal basis as they made the journey through higher education, I have a deep understanding for counseling individuals into fields in which they thrive. I use one on one counseling to understand their backgrounds and interests and direct them accordingly.
I have been a member of the National Association of College Admissions Counseling (NACAC) for 6 years. At YES Prep I am one of two college counselors and have been for 7 years. Furthermore, I've led a college knowledge seminar course for seniors for 6 years.
I have many years coaching cross country and track and field. Additionally, I was a cross country and track athlete through middle and high school. I love the sport of running and have coached both high school and adult runners.
