A bit about me: I graduated from UC Berkeley in 2018 with a linguistics degree. I started tutoring when I was a student and have continued since graduating, with a focus on math tutoring and ACT/SAT prep. I've annotated past ACTs for solution guides in order to assist in creating teaching curriculum for a company I work for.

I'm passionate about empowering students to understand difficult concepts and learn how to approach new topics. I want my students to eventually not need me. My job is to make you feel more confident in your own knowledge.

At the beginning of each session, I go over the short-term and long-term goals of the session and adjust my tutoring style accordingly. I am always looking for feedback, as it helps do the very best job possible. If a concept just isn't clicking during a session, we will take a step back and try something else.
Please contact me if you have any questions or want to schedule a session!

*COVID update* This year has presented a set of unique challenges to students. The transition to online learning has been potentially uneven, making the new school year even harder. During this adjustment, I can help you fill in any gaps in knowledge from last year needed in current coursework.

Group Rates - If you have a group of students that wants to set up a group session, we can arrange that. I feel comfortable teaching all high school topics. My group rates are below.

I've been tutoring math of all high school levels - Geometry & IM1 through Calculus) for the last 2 years at local high schools through GU and UB programs. Although I previously tutored on site, I've been doing virtual tutoring for community colleges and high schools since March 2020.

I've always loved math (and got a 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam), but didn't always know how it fit in with my other academic pursuits. Tutoring is a fantastic combination of all of my interests.

I believe that my language focus (my BA was in Linguistics) allows me to be a very effective math

Linguistics

I studied Linguistics at UC Berkeley with a 3.8 major GPA. I was also accepted into LRAP, the linguistics research apprenticeship practicum, where I was paired with a doctoral candidate mentor to assist him with his research on Korean/English speakers' phonetic characteristics. I took classes including the major subjects (Phonetics, Phonology, Syntax, Morphology, and Semantics) as well as Psycholinguistics, Bilingualism, Language Acquisition, and others.

One of the hardest things about writing is sitting down and doing it. We may have a general idea for papers but struggle to put words on the page. I work with students to create a structure, so that all you have to do is follow the plan. I want to remove the element of writing anxiety. Other students may be able to write a version of their paper but don't feel that their skills are at the level they need to be. I'm experienced in analyzing papers for improvement and suggesting targeted advice to improve your grades. I also encourage students to ask themselves the same questions, so that you can improve your own writing. I want to enable you to feel confident about your own skills!
SAT Reading,

SAT Reading

Back when I took the SAT, it was out of 2400, but the same strategies still apply! It's important to learn how to use the test format to your advantage, and I was able to get a 2260 using the following strategies: For SAT Reading, I focus on teaching students ways to conserve their time during the passages. I've found that the timed element is what impacts students' scores the most, and that improving pacing allows students more time to focus on the questions and how to answer them. They also are more able to avoid trap answers with this improved focus. This lets them get as many points as possible! For SAT Writing, I also focus on strategies to use the testing format as a guide for their answer choices. I will teach the necessary grammar points that end up losing students points (dangling modifiers, pronoun cases like who/whom, and other common mistakes), but I also make sure that students compare the possible answer choices to see what the questions are asking. For SAT Math, I focus on making sure that students have the foundations that will allow them to approach problems. Based on their goal score and performance on particular types of problems, I tailor a tutoring plan to help get them the maximum amount of points possible given our time frame before the exam date. For example, there are about 6-7 geometry questions on the SAT. If trying to add a few points to a consistent score, I might focus on acing geometry. For a student who is looking for larger improvement, I might focus more on the algebraic problems. I also emphasize methods that will allow students to filter through the many word problems and use the multiple choice format to their advantage.

Knowledgeable Tutor

Emma has done an amazing job of engaging with my son for pre-calc tutoring. She gets right to business and doesn’t waste time. I was nervous about adding in another online learning platform but she is AMAZING! He went from having a D when he started to ending the semester with a B in the class.

So Excited found Emma to teacher my daughter!

Today is our first lesson. Emma and my daughter connected well and they were able to start the writing discussion right away. Can’t wait to see how much my daughter can learn from Emma in 2021!

Patient and so friendly tutor

Emma taught me how to build skills in Linguistics and how to analyse data. The most thing I like about Emma is her style of teaching in breaking the data to components and explain it step by step in clear method. I really want to appreciate and thank her for being such a wonderful person/ teacher .
