About Laura

Expert and easy-going English tutor available for help with schoolwork, college essays, test prep or general writing skill enhancement. Writing and literary analysis is easy to master once the basics are understood, as is being a successful writer. I have helped many students figure out how to take a confounding prompt in any subject, and turn out an excellent response. Not a clue why you received such a low score on the literary section of a standardized test? We can work through the literary section together and you can learn what you need to do differently. In addition to years of teaching public high school English, I have also taught college composition and literature classes, provided college counseling, coached completion of dissertations, in addition to working with English language learners. Tutoring can be done in person, or on-line.

If you are particularly dreading college or grad school essay writing, know that I am very experienced in this process, and know how to help you find the perfect topic that makes your application shine, draft, revise and polish your work to a truly exceptional level. Over the past 10 years as college applications have become more competitive, student essays have become more and more important to the selection process. They are in a large sense a marketing document that is used to distinguish you from other excellent candidates. 650 words or 550 words require your essay to be very focused and refined, and this often takes some time and thought which is in short supply in the fall once AP classes start again. I particularly encourage Class of 2011 to begin their college essay process in the summer and complete most of their revisions before their senior year begins. This is particularly important for Early Decision candidates. If you are also unsure about where you want to go to college, or where to start the college search process, you will find that much of the stressful enormity of the task turns to excitement and curiosity when you are guided by someone who knows the path.

I hold a current California State Single Subject English Credential, as well as a Multiple Subject Credential. My bachelor's degree was earned at University of California, San Diego, and in addition, I hold a Master of Fine Arts in Writing from San Diego State University. I am also a freelance writer and editor, as well as a book consultant and coach. I find all types or writing instruction and assistance fascinating, and I love working with students who are perhaps unaware of their potential as excellent writers. Writing is an easy process, and with assistance, clients are always successful in becoming fine writers. As well, analyzing literature is also a simple task, once understood.

Please contact me if you would like to strengthen writing skills, you can't figure out what your English teacher wants or why you aren't successful in class, or just need help in English. I am available for any senior facing the writing of college essays or personal statements, who are concerned about the importance of these writings. You are right to be very aware of their importance. If you are in grad school and are ABD and desperately want to finish your Phd, I have coached many candidates to a successful document and defense. English learners, if you need an analysis of your writing and where to improve, or want to practice pronunciation, sessions can help you shorten the distance to fluency. I look forward to meeting you, and helping you on your educational journey.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
