For 15+ years I have been tutoring students ranging from middle school through college and even graduate school. I’m comfortable with a variety of subjects, focusing on the quantitative: math, statistics, and computer science.

I've been commended for my patience, and for my ability to balance the help I give, giving just the right amount of guidance -- not too little, and not too much. I often let the student take the lead, but jump in with explanations as needed. I'll make sure that, by the time our session is over, you've actually learned the material, and can do it on your own. I know multiple ways of teaching the same material, and can adapt to your leaning style. Students say I explain things in a way that just “clicks”, and that’s because I’m good at reading whether a particular explanation is working for a student or not.

I have an advanced education, and have experience applying math and computer programming to solve real problems. I have a graduate level degree, have worked for universities and labs, and have some academic publications related to applied math, statistics and machine learning. I can program in many languages. When not tutoring, I continue to hone these skills on my own projects. But I’m also adept at bringing these skills to others. Since I first started tutoring as an undergraduate, I’ve learned that I love helping others learn, and I’ve refined my process for doing that.

Students who lack self confidence often find me a good match, because of my easygoing style. But ambitious students also match well with me, because of my advanced knowledge of difficult subjects and my ability to adapt to their pace. I have years of experience with students at all points in their academic career. With high-achieving students looking for careers in a STEM field, as well as those who “hate math”.

C,

C

I've been programming since around the age of 12, and started with C++. I've had a lot of experience with C-derived languages like C++ and Java, but have also gotten acquainted with old fashioned C. My degree is in Cognitive Science, with a specialty in Computation. I completed most of the coursework for a Minor in Computer Science. Some of those classes required use of C, and helped me familiarize myself with its concepts and libraries. I have also written C code in my spare time for hobby projects, for instance modifying games written in C. In my years as a tutor, I've found myself able to help students who are using this language in their classes.
C++,

Statistics

Statistics

I consider Statistics one of my strongest subjects, and am very experienced as a tutor in this subject. I worked at a tutoring center in college and post-college, where I regularly helped with this material. In graduate school, I was as a TA for undergraduate classes in Statistics, giving lectures and offering one-on-one help during my office hours. I also regularly tutor Statistics privately. This subject is one of the most common subjects I'm asked to tutor through WyzAnt. I have taken many college and graduate-level Statistics classes, and I have even authored scholarly papers describing applications of statistical and probability theory. In short, I have advanced knowledge of the subject, but importantly, I also have plenty of experience tutoring the basics for students who haven't yet or don't plan to take more than just the introductory course.

Linear Algebra

I have tutored Linear Algebra for many years. I've also used Linear Algebra in practical application, in research I conducted at UCSD, and in personal and professional computer programming projects. I can help you understand vector spaces, matrices, and so on, and how they can be used in fields like data science and engineering.
Logic,

Logic

As an undergraduate, I took multiple classes, in the Computer Science and Math departments, that covered formal logic. I'm somewhat personally interested in the history and philosophy of logic, and have read books on the subject.

Trigonometry

A subject all about circles and angles. For many students, this will be the first class in which they encounter problems that are more like "puzzles", with no single obvious path to a solution. Proving trigonometric identities, for instance, is more an art than a science. I have a lot of professional experience tutoring this subject. For many years, I worked at a math tutoring center, and I was commonly asked for help with Trigonometry. I have gotten very good at guiding students gently, and helping them achieve the experience and confidence they need to solve these problems independently.

Knowledgeable and effective

I can’t recommend him enough! he explains the problems thoroughly without wasting anytime and makes sure that you understand everything. I leaned a lot from him and will definitely book a lesson every time I’m stuck with a MATLAB problem.

Always a huge help

I was feeling that this material was just a wall of gibberish words that couldn’t get into my head. After Jacob patiently helped me work through it the lightbulbs started going off and I got a 100 on the quiz!

Natalie, 27 lessons with Jacob

Helped me for an interview

Jacob helped me prepare for an interview that included all of these subjects: calculus, linear algebra, statistics, probability, computer science, machine learning, and deep learning. This ranged from basic to advanced concepts. I think he is a great tutor. He articulately explains, and will try different ways to illustrate if you don't understand. He also takes the time to communicate with you before and after sessions by answering questions and going over what you can work on to make the most of the sessions.

Highly recommend

Great lesson as always. Jacob was able to explain in a few minutes what I didn’t understand from my course after 3 lectures.

Helpful and Fantastically Knowledgeable Coder

Jacob helped me elliptical plot the orbit of Jupiter about the sun, the difference between an exponential function and its Taylor expansion with respect to # of terms, and an axial interchange of distance vs. time. THANK you. I can't recommend him enough.

Highly recommend

Great lesson as always. After several weeks of lessons the material is becoming more intuitive and my last test grade was more than 30 points higher than the first (taken before beginning tutoring with Jacob).

Excellent teacher

Very efficiently helpful. Each lesson is productive. We get through the assignment but also learn new concepts and I come away with a deeper understanding of the material.

flexible patient smart tutor

We worked on octave and some machine learning programming assignments and he dove right in, was up to speed almost instantly and was a big help in getting me to understand how to debug and modify the code. A pleasure to work with.
