About Lori

My passion for teaching can be evidenced by walking into my classroom on any given day. My 20-year career as a professional educator has spanned 5 states and every grade level, from K through college. My last 11 years have been spent teaching at the college level in English and Reading. As a former Special Educator, I have taught students ranging from LD, ED, ADD, ADHD, HI, Autistic, OHI, and MR in inclusion, resource, self-contained and blended settings. To better reach the majority of special needs students who have difficulty with reading skills, I obtained my Master’s in Education with a Reading Specialty. As a Reading Specialist, it has been my mission to help every student in general education and special education, regardless of their skill level, to improve their reading skills, understand the relationship between reading and success in life, and develop an interest in reading through high-interest, relatable, and inspirational stories in order that they might ultimately gain a love of reading and become life-long readers. As a remedial English College Instructor, I love combining my love for reading with grammar and writing skills and facilitating an environment where my students learn to love writing and reading, some for the first time ever.

As a military spouse, I have been afforded opportunities to teach in every region of the U.S. and rich experiences with diverse populations across our contiguous states and in Hawaii. As a mother of 4 children ranging from 10 to 18 (and the youngest with special needs), I understand how frustrating it can be when my own child is struggling with a subject, especially when they seem to be trying their hardest.

I specialize in helping students of all ages to improve their reading skills, basic English skills, and preparation for SAT (mainly the English & reading portions). I will assign homework after every session and provide periodic assessments if requested. Due to my hectic schedule as a teacher and mother, I have a 24 hour cancellation policy, but will offer makeup sessions if needed.

I will travel to a mutually convenient meeting place, such as a public library, coffee shop, or another convenient location. If the parent would prefer their home location, I require a quiet room, with no noise, TV or other distractions during the session. I have found that the best, most conducive setting for learning, however, tends to be a location away from home distractions.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you (or your child) achieve success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
