Rutgers University (French)
I have been traveling the world ever since I can remember, so I must attribute my love of languages and culture to that. It led me to seek a BA in French from Rutgers University and pursue a career as a translator and interpreter. Coming from a country whose language is so rich and complex, I feel privileged to have Portuguese as my native language, for it greatly facilitated my learning of other languages, such as English, French and Spanish.
Along the years, my diverse career path has allowed me to experience multiple situations where a language barrier prevented a fluid exchange of essential information, motivating me to share my knowledge of language and culture through interpreting, translating and tutoring. Learning a new language involves more than just memorizing words and how to put them together. It takes understanding its people and where it comes from to truly be fluent, for it is a representation of the country's culture and customs as well as its history. In teaching Portuguese to someone, I bring this knowledge of the country into the lesson thus facilitating the understanding of certain words/phrases over other ones.
I teach Portuguese grammar, writing and conversation to those seeking to learn a new language, looking to pass a foreign language course, or just wanting to learn the basics to get by in a Portuguese speaking country. From children to adults, I've been able to create the appropriate lesson plan that best fits the student and his/her goals. In Portugal, I tutored English to college classmates, helping them to pass the mandatory English classes. Here in the US, I have helped students with their Portuguese foreign language class as well as those seeking to just learn the language for personal enjoyment. Being a native from Portugal, and having lived there for the first 15 years of my life and then having gone back there for 4 years of college, I feel very qualified in teaching the language.
I have a strict 24 hour cancellation policy but I am definitely available for makeup classes. I can offer my lessons at the student's preferred location with flexible hours, including weekends.
I look forward to hearing from you soon as our "aventura portuguesa" awaits!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Bachelor of Arts in French and a Minor in Linguistics from Rutgers University and years of experience as an interpreter and translator between English, Portuguese, Spanish and French. I also have a Bachelor's in Business from Universidade Internacional in Lisbon, Portugal. I'm currently seeking my ESL/TOEFLE credential but I have been teaching Portuguese grammar, writing and conversation for years to Spanish, English and French speakers who want to learn the language from a native.
