Although my educational journey started some time ago, it’s never been more enjoyable. Along the way I’ve studied and earned degrees in Business (BBA), Spanish (BA), and Romance Language Philology (MA, Spanish concentration).
As I tracked my way toward and beyond degrees, I did a lot of tutoring, starting at the University of San Diego (math and writing labs); since then, I’ve continually applied principles that have worked within and across subjects, even as I was studying courses, such as Western Civilization.
Decades of teaching full-time, some part-time, and lots of tutoring--always--have me becoming a better teacher every day, since I’m always learning and refining. What that brings to you (or the person you have being tutored) is unmatched experience, breadth, and depth of expertise across a host of subjects. When you mix unmatched enthusiasm--just read some reviews--the student ends up with a session packed with things that -simplify- the material and studying.
Are these things missing from the classroom? Is there any teaching left in schools?
Wherever I tutor, the story is roughly the same: the “teacher” takes attendance and puts up a presentation; the students take snapshots of what’s on the screen or board; and the students break into groups to figure it all out. The “teacher?” Oh, s/he is reading the paper. And if you ask for help? Oh, there are tons of brilliant, exciting, online resources sure to dazzle and educate with no effort.
It’s not working, is it?
As has usually been the case in education, the key is to teach -how- to think, much more so than -what- to think. Included in “how to think” is using simple, reliable techniques that work all the time, make the student better, help the student study, and --oh, yeah-- save time.
In order to be the most professional educator I can be, I believe I must be a perpetual student, have real enthusiasm, and care. Within the “student” category, I’m always on the lookout for simpler expressions and technique, always open to how the student is thinking, and always ready to deconstruct something and see how it works.
If you’re ready to really learn something, practice, and make your life easier in a host of subjects, contact me, and we’ll see if there’s a good fit.
If the subject you're working on is Spanish, I assure you that I have native-like fluency and am expert in teaching grammar, pronunciation, writing, and such. Although my educational journey started some time ago, it’s never been more enjoyable. Along the way I’ve studied and earned degrees in Business (BBA), Spanish (BA), and Romance Language Philology (MA, Spanish concentration).

Group rates depend on the number of students in the group.
My son was beyond thrilled with the first tutoring session with Mark. He told me after he left, that it was the best Tutoring session he has ever had! Of course I was thrilled to hear that! My son said he learned so much from Mark and that he wishes his teachers at school were as good as him. He asked me right away to book another session with Mark. I am in awe at the level of passion and dedication Mark has for teaching and for making every effort to make sure the material is not only understood but also enjoyed. Remarkable Tutoring experience- Ten Stars !
Mark continues to motivate Ryan to do well in all subjects. His enthusiasm is contagious and the helpful advice and strategies he is sharing with Ryan are valuable. Ryan has gone from a C- to an A in Math. More importantly, Ryan feels ready and confident.
Although my daughter was not feeling well on our scheduled day, Mark found ways to keep her engaged and interested in learning. He made her understand the meaning of certain words that are commonly used in Math questions and their similarities. Highly recommend.
We couldn't be happier with Mark's pre calculus tutoring session today. His passion for teaching was refreshing. He explained in a way that was easy to understand and follow. We will definitely request him again in the future.
Mark has changed my sons attitude towards math. He is now more positive and confident about taking a test in his algebra 1 class. Mark has taught him little steps to take to make answering the questions a little easier. He had a great way of explaining processes to my son that really stuck and worked for him.
Mark has a comfortable approach to learning, which makes him more responsive to the students. He has a vast amount of materials on which he relies for the aid of his students. He is a dedicated teacher ---Thanks be to God that we have individuals like him in the teaching field.
My daughter said that Mark helps her understand algebra in a way that no one else has. "It's not only formulas!" Quote from my daughter. We will continue to use Mark.
Mark loves math! My son was overwhelmed by the challenge of Business Calculus. Mark was patient and clear and helped him understand what had once been confusing. Mark helped put him back on track. We made the right choice when we chose him.
When Mark left my daughter said he was the first tutor that really explained things. She wants to have him back!
He helped me understand that knowing short cuts in math will help me be more successful on the SAT. Mark is energetic, which helped me pay attention. He made learning fun.
Mark has amazing methods of test taking and school studying in general. After only a few short lessons I already feel like I'm improving.
Gives great SAT strategies in short order. My teen son related well to him. Animated style holds his attention. Very encouraging and builds confidence.
Mark helped my son with ACT/SAT prep. He gave great test taking tips, and made my son who isn't a great student or test taker feel that he can really improve his score. I absolutely was so impressed after only one class.
Mark taught my son exactly what he had asked for. My son has expressed disappointment with tutors in the past but Mark established a good rapport with him, and my son would like to see him again
Great first visit. Our son was visibly relieved after the session with Mark. Mark has already figured out how our son thinks and how best to help him understand the material. He is looking forward to meeting with Mark again next Tuesday. Thank you.
Mark has been very helpful in preparing my daughter for the SAT! He has a lot of test taking strategies and she is feeling more confident about it now.
Engaged Mark's services for remedial work in prep for SAT. He quickly established a rapport with our grandson which permitted correction of the existing blocks promptly. We highly recommend him.
It was great to have Mark back after the summer break. My daughter requested him because of his great ability to help her understand and his enthusiasm!!
My son enjoys learning geometry with Mark. At the completion of his lesson he is interested in scheduling the next lesson. Very positive experience.
This was our first time using a tutor so we were a little unsure what to expect. Mark was prompt and easy to talk to. My son seemed to understand the lesson and appreciated Mark's willingness to patiently explain the basic concepts of Geometry. Of course we will need to see how our son can now apply these concepts to his work. I'm hoping that there will be a little less apprehension and a lot more understanding.
Mark has worked with my daughter and her two friends to prepare for their calculus exams. Their teacher told them quite openly at the beginning of the year that she would not teach them the material but will expect them to figure the work out for themselves. After working with Mark, these girls' eyes were opened and they all clear on all of their math, acing their final semester exam.
Mark connected with the girls very well, added a little humor, and made them feel comfortable. He knows his subject extremely well and most importantly, he broke it down for them so that they almost knew it as well as he did by the time they left. I would recommend to anyone with a challenge.
Mark has been extremely encouraging in helping my daughter to better her ACT score. He takes much of the mystique out of the test which allows for more relaxed test taking. We are hopeful that this will translate into better scores!
Mark works really well with my 13 year old son for Honors Algebra. He knows how to explain concepts and methods of solving the problems in a way that makes the subject interesting.
Mark was great. He helped prepare my son to take the SAT for the first time. Mark really connected with my son and kept him motivated. I would highly recommend Mark!
Mark made such a difference for us. In a short amount of time he had my son able to pass the Mira Costa Algebra Placement exam the first time. He saw other tutors but having someone relaxed who made him feel capable and confident made all the difference. It's not just about the content, it's about being motivated to keep going and that's what Mark brings to the table. We'll definitely use him again for the upcoming algebra class.
Mark is a great tutor who is very positive and works well with teenagers. We recommend him to anyone who is looking for help -- we are grateful for his time and commitment!
Mark is a wonderful tutor for all aspects of the SAT. I was initially looking for a SAT Math tutor only but ended up using his skills to help me improve for the entire SAT. I will miss being tutored by him and know my score will reflect the effort he put into our sessions. I highly recommend selecting Mark as your tutor! You will not be disappointed!
Mark has been an excellent tutor for my son, he has been patient, and most of all encouraging. His enthusiasm for learning and making things "easy" has been very beneficial. He has also been very accessible. My son has a fantastic memory, and had memorized his way through school. Mark is now helping him to understand "why" things are the way they are in Math. Now that is learning!!!
Mark is a very well rounded and great tutor that knows the in's and out's of the SAT and ACT. His teachings and simplistic ideas for math make the math section more doable and easier for the students. His passion and commitment for the students to succeed is through the roof. He doesn't let the students get lazy and is pushing them to do their very best. Tutoring sessions are never boring because he keeps the students entertained and always working. Mark is an awesome tutor that will accommodate every student's needs and does his very best to achieve their ultimate goal.
Mark has done a great job preparing my son for his upcoming ACT Test Saturday, 9/21/13. They both have worked hard over the past month and I'm confident his score will reflect their efforts! We will continue to utilize Mark's tutoring talents to achieve his goals.
Thank you Mark! I am so impressed how you connected with my son. He has in the past been resistant to tutoring, but sure seems happy with your instruction. Thanks again!
Mark is very good at explaining how two seemingly different problems can be solved the exact same way. He's good at showing how to solve a problem the fastest way possible avoiding calculator use when not necessary. Mark is very energetic and patient and he's good at not only teaching how to solve a problem, but to use prior knowledge and apply it to different problems.
Mark worked with an adult ESL student on the skills needed to pass the difficult TOEFL test, a requirement for graduation at Tech de Monterrey. He established immediate rapport, using humor and his ability to converse in the student's native language. His knowledge of the test requirements and his skills as a grammarian were evident immediately, and not one precious moment was wasted during the sessions. His ability to explain concepts in Spanish and relating the two languages made a real impact in the time at which new concepts were absorbed. The student's confidence was built tremendously through the positive input given by this personable, and talented tutor. We were so fortunate to have found Mark!
Mark did an excellent job with my son reviewing for a quiz and helping him solve the problems. He gives good feedback to the parents also.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I've done all sorts of professional writing, including sports, opinion, eulogy, school, and linguistic. What they all have in common is that using the right process eliminates writer's block, which shouldn't exist.
And I show it.
I spent two seasons as an assistant JV coach under a former PGA tour professional. He asked me back for another season after the first, so I believe his recommendation would be solid.
I've been doing precalculus successfully for over 30 years, and by "successfully" I mean that I understand it simply and thoroughly, get it across well, and tailor explanations to modes of thinking.
I've been tutoring for the SAT, ACT, and other standardized tests for 30 years, keeping up with the changes.
What's exciting for me is that the same approaches and techniques for the test should be applied for multiple subjects in school.
There are no "tricks." I help simplify and amplify a lot of a student's academic work.
I have a master's in the language, am absolutely fluent, and have experience teaching every level.
As a student, observer, co-director, and director, I've been part of 12 study abroad programs. For one with colleagues in Spain, the Director of International Programs said that my students speak better Spanish than any other student group that visits.
