About DR. D Akira

Heinrich Schliemann was the famous amateur Archaeologist who discovered and excavated Troy. Early on he knew that finding funding for chasing a myth or legend would be next to impossible. Moreover, he realized that unless he was independently wealthy, he would starve as an Anthropologist. To this end, Schliemann founded a shipping company, brokered gold dust in California, and played the stock market after a few years as a military contractor. He made millions, and then pursued his academic dreams of seeing the walls of Troy.

I am no Schliemann, but after I received my MA in Physical Anthropology, I, too, realized that living as an Anthropologist would be a struggle. So I went on to pursue a PhD in Computer Science - Artificial Intelligence/Neural Networks. Along the way I taught computer programming, statistics & physical anthropology as adjunct faculty (Chaminade, University Hawaii, Central Texas College). After receiving my PhD, I then began a career working for the Federal Government, Department of the Navy.

Recently retired, I seek to once again return to my first love - teaching at the university level. Use me.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

Heinrich Schliemann was the famous amateur Archaeologist who discovered and excavated Troy. Early on he knew that finding funding for chasing a myth or legend would be next to impossible. Moreover, he realized that unless he was independently wealthy, he would starve as an Archaeologist. To this end, Schliemann founded a shipping company. I received my anthropology graduate degree (MA) from the University of Hawaii Manoa (UHM), Department of Anthropology. The core curriculum consisted of 3 courses, one in each of the subdomains of anthropology: cultural; physical; and, archaeology. I entered the departmentwith the intention of concentrating on Archaeology specifically Lithic Technology, but I soon discovered that I was much more interested in the biological side of culture & human evolution - Physical Anthropology. I can directly contribute this shift to the publication of Sociobiology by EO Wilson, specifically the last chapter on the genetic basis of social behavior. In my second year of graduate school I received a research internship from the East West Center (UHM) in demographic/population simulation component of the Australian Resources & Environmental Assessment (AREA) model under Chadwick. In addition, I was accepted into the Department of Genetics, School of Medicine (UHM), to pursue a dual PhD, in concert with my PhD track in Anthropology. It was intended that I would examine alcohol dehydrogenase in Asian populations (genetics) under the department chairman Ashton, with a discussion of the culture of alcohol use in Asian populations (anthropology). A year later another genetics graduate student was given Ashton's earlier data on alcohol dehydrogenase. Since I had been funding my studies by crunching statistics using SAS & SPSSx for various professors on campus, & running massive simulation models, I was no stranger to the UHM Computer Center - I practically lived there. So, I wrapped up my MA in Anthropology, going on to a PhD in Computer Science at another university with the intent of returning to Anthropology when I retired.

Computer Science

I have a PhD in Computer Science from Kennedy Western University (Research Dept. Navy, Neural Networks). I am a Computer Scientist with 20 years' experience, SPAWAR Dept. Navy.
