About Ben

I am an Engineering PhD student and National Science Foundation fellow with an Excellence in Teaching Certificate, now available for math and science tutoring at all levels! I have over a decade of experience tutoring in one-on-one and small group settings, for any high school or undergraduate math or science course as well as standardized test prep. I am available for in-home sessions or meeting at libraries or coffee shops in the East Bay with very flexible scheduling options. I am patient, friendly, clear, and great at simplifying complex math and science topics for students who are struggling or are just excited to get a step ahead.

My Math SAT II score was 800, and I have a Master's Degree in Applied Mathematics. My Calculus AB AP score was 5. My AP Physics score was 5, and I have multiple publications in physics fields.

I am a Bay Area native with degrees in engineering and math from Harvey Mudd College, Santa Clara University, and UC Davis. I was part of a high school robotics team and have always loved all things math and science!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Differential Equations

I am a PhD student in mechanical engineering at UC Davis studying differential equations in control systems. I recently published a peer-reviewed, open-source software package for solving differential equations. I have given talks and presented papers at academic conferences showing the result of solving differential equations. At my most recent presentation, Buzz Aldrin the American astronaut was in attendance!

Linear Algebra

I love linear algebra and use it almost every day in my research and studies of control systems, optimization, machine learning, and statistical signal processing. For my Certificate of Completion for the workshop Demonstrated Excellence: “Scholarly Teaching Strategies to Maximize Student Learning” from the Center for Educational Effectiveness at UC Davis, I gave a teaching demonstration of a first lecture on linear algebra. I also have a paper under peer review at an education focused journal discussing connections between linear algebra topics that are not usually taught together.
