About Adriana

¡Hola!
I am a Colombian professional musician with experience in Spanish and Music Education.

-About my music teaching experience:
I am professional Flute player with experience teaching students of all backgrounds. From elementary school students to university undergraduates, I have given classes in Flute technique, music theory, sight singing, and ear training. I have had the opportunity to work with many exceptional musicians across different music genres: Classical, Contemporary, Experimental/Electronic music and Latin American music. I’ve been part of projects around the world (Colombia, the United States, France, Uruguay, and México), including chamber music groups, symphony orchestras, wind ensembles, opera, interdisciplinary collaborative works, young composer’s premieres, new music and Latin American music.

Some projects included:
• Music Ensembles: Mills College - Contemporary Performance Ensemble, National Symphony of Colombia, The Ibero- American Symphony Orchestra of Uruguay Jeunesses Musicales, University of Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, L’Orchestre de Flutes Francais, El Bosque University Symphony Orchestra, Javeriana University Symphony Orchestra, among others.
• Festivals: Process Dance Festival 2017, Signal Flow 2014 -2016, Texas Flute Festival 2010, Oaxaca Music Festival 2008-2007, among others.

Some of the Music programs I’ve worked with include:
• University of Arkansas, Fayetteville
• Batuta National Music Foundation (Colombia)
• El Rosario School (Barrancabermeja, Colombia)
• Javeriana University (Bogota, Colombia)
• Among others.

In my classes, I like to encourage my students to be as creative they want to be applying the concepts they learn during class. I got a certification in Suzuki Method Philosophy and have experience learning and teaching music through Orff Method.

-About my Spanish teaching experience:
I have been active as a Spanish language and culture educator, working with students from Pre-K through Middle School, in Spanish programs serving different schools throughout the Bay Area. I also have experience as an educational supervisor and curriculum designer.
In my classes, I try to connect with my students' interests and needs in order to create interactive lessons. These are my teaching techniques:
1. Bilingual/Full immersion classes (depending on students' proficiency).
2. Use of cultural context to introduce Spanish grammar and vocabulary topics.
3. Using musical techniques to improve pronunciation and memorize vocabulary.
4. Creative writing exercises to encourage the use of Spanish as an expression tool.

My main goal for my students is to encourage them to practice in contexts of interaction in the world around them. Also, I highly encourage my students to discover Latino/Hispanic culture, an important tool that will give them a better understanding of the Spanish language, including grammar. I am looking forward to helping you build your strength and confidence learning Spanish.

Adriana was great - friendly and fun to work with

Our first lesson started with greetings and basic conversation. It was fun and we look forward to continuing lessons with her. She made the lesson fun for my teenage daughter by working in references to pop culture, and was very patient.
