Overview:
I received my Master of Arts in Teaching from Brandeis University while teaching 3rd grade at a suburban school in Massachusetts. During that time, I earned an additional certification to work with students with moderate disabilities. I then taught a combined 4th/5th grade class at a rural school in Arizona, where I primarily worked with students learning English. I later moved on to become a behavior technician trained in Pivotal Response Training and ABA therapy and gained extensive experience managing a wide range of behaviors and needs.
Writing, English Language Arts, and ESL:
As an undergraduate, I studied linguistics and journalism at Brandeis University, where I held three different editor positions on a local independent newspaper. My writing has been appeared in multiple publications, including weekly newspapers and monthly magazines. I'm familiar with a range of citation styles, including MLA, APA, Chicago, and AP. I have taught elementary writing and reading lessons to whole classes, small groups, and individuals.
I tutored ESL for four years, and I taught an SEI (Sheltered/Structured English Immersion) class for 4th/5th graders for one year. I've worked with adults and children at various stages of learning, and I've created lessons ranging from basic vocabulary and grammar to conversation and pronunciation practice. I excel at providing additional supports (such as translations, visuals, and scaffolding) as needed.
My Philosophy:
I believe tutoring is a back-and-forth dialogue, and I do my best to implement student feedback every step of the way. During the first few sessions, I'll take care to assess a student's strengths, as well as potential areas of improvement.
I'm happy to work with students of all ages and abilities, and I look forward to helping students succeed with anything they need. Please contact me, and we'll talk about how to best meet your learning goals!
