About Wendy

I have seven years of classroom experience teaching grammar, writing, and speaking to international students and native speakers of English. My MA is in English with an emphasis on TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.) I also have extensive one-on-one experience as a tutor. The combination of classroom and tutoring skills means I know how to tailor lessons to best meet the needs of individuals.

Whether you are a native speaker who wants her personal statement to show you at your at your best and most authentic, or you are an adult learner who needs help with English pronunciation for presentation, I can design a learning plan for you. Students still write me and thank me for my work with thorny grammar issues they mastered in my classroom or in my tutoring practice. Tutoring is a give-and-take, a conversational way of learning that takes away the anxiety and chaos of the classroom. I love getting to know students' blocks, talking through them and watching them "get it."

I have passed the CBEST, and I have a certificate as well as an MA in TESOL. I also have a background in magazine publishing as a line editor and writer.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have an ESL teaching certificate, as well a an MA in teaching English as a Second Language. I have lots of classroom and tutoring experience!

Proofreading

I am a former proofreader for a magazine.

Public Speaking

I have taught presentation skills in an intensive English program to international students. I taught micro skills related to pronunciation, such as thought groups and sentence contours. I've also taught skills necessary to succeed as a speaker in any setting, academic, or non-academic. These skills include appropriate use of visual support, managing anxiety, and engaging the speaker's audience.
