Lewis and Clark College (English Literature)
I have been teaching ESL courses for six years. I taught academic and professional writing, speaking, grammar, and reading in South Korea. I spent one year and a half teaching different levels in select ESL programs before opening my own English tutoring business. I taught classes that ranged in size from five to forty students per class. I also offered one-to-one tutoring services.
I specialize in writing, and have assisted students of various ages and levels in gaining acceptance to institutions or professional opportunities. I have ample experience developing challenging yet level-appropriate curriculum. The focus of my classes have varied from business English, literary studies, and grammatically directed speaking to reading and listening, and pronunciation and elocution. I also have experience teaching students with special needs.
Over the course of my stay in Korea, I became an intermediate Korean speaker. Being a second language learner myself has given me valuable insight into the ESL student experience. Furthermore, understanding the grammatical differences and similarities between English and Korean allowed me to better instruct my students in their transition to English conversation and writing.
I approach teaching with two purposes in mind. First, to instruct students in American standard English, urging them towards a higher level of competency which is required for educational and professional advancement. Second, to introduce topics and elements of interest that allow students to enjoy the language holistically. By treating English both as a topic of study and as a living language, I have assisted dozens of students in not only raising scores and writing better essays, but also in developing a sense of ownership over their second language.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
