About Ana

Being the first in my family to obtain a college degree and a minority student from an impoverished inner city, I felt that I lacked academic support and knowledge from friends and family; therefore, I sought other outlets to expand and discuss my academic career goals and fears. I concurrently worked full-time while pursuing BS and MS degrees at the University of Michigan (UM) and participated in the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) at UM. The program was designed for underrepresented undergraduates to conduct research and utilize peer prepared seminars for exposure to various research fields. Wanting to share my research experience, I applied for and accepted the role of UROP peer advisor for two consecutive years. In this position, I inculcated various engineering research topics, including sustainability, to a class of more than 25 undergraduate students and held office hours to meet students one on one for tutoring, mentoring, and advising on coursework and social adjustments to college. I also became involved with the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program by tutoring women in organic chemistry courses. I strongly support programs that encourage students from diverse backgrounds to pursue degrees and research in fields in which they are traditionally underrepresented, thus enhancing the learning experience for everyone.
While working with WISE and UROP, I gained valuable leadership skills in understanding and valuing the opinions and perceptions of students from all backgrounds. By expanding upon what students already knew and allowing students to participate in helping plan the course syllabi, I was able to effectively communicate with students of various learning styles. I continued this open communication method of teaching at Rice University where, in my second year, I offered to teach three of my advisor’s classes covering groundwater flow and forecasting for population and environment growth. I promoted participation in the course by encouraging discussions on topics students could relate to, and helping them connect what they already knew to the new material I was teaching; I offered office hours to encourage one-on-one discussions. While I have graduate from Rice and now work as an Environmental Consultant, I still tutor students in the evening and on weekends to continue my lifelong mission of encouraging learning and curiosity.

Using science and technology to help promote and better understand the natural environment is a passion of mine, and I am a strong advocate of learning science, technology, engineering, and mathematical skills to better one’s life and environment. I have taught, mentored, and tutored students in a variety of positions over the last decade. At the University level, I guest lectured courses in Introduction to Environmental Engineering, as well as first and second level courses in Hydrology. I mentored undergraduates as a part of the Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate program, and have taught discussion sessions in Organic Chemistry. For k-12 education, I have tutored students in level appropriate math, science, and English. When appropriate, I’ve provided individualized worksheets, study guides, and other study material useful to learning. My experience ranges from being a research assistant to leading undergraduates through research pursuits in a supervisory role. Utilizing all the tools and skills I have learned in research and industry to teach and inspire students is something I strive to continue.

Currently, I mentor and tutor students who have the willingness and desire to learn, but need help with study skills, how to approach an unfamiliar problem, and general review of lessons learned during class. I can provide challenging problems for students who are ahead in class, and level appropriate material and support for students who are struggling to keep up.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemical Engineering

I received my bachelors in Chemical Engineering and have work both in industry and academia using this discipline. I routinely helped in the lower level courses for discussion sessions and helped in research endeavors in the upper level courses.

Common Core

Common Core uses evidence based reasoning, understanding, and explaining for students to come to the "right conclusion." I have tutored students using a very similar methodology for the last 10 years - well before Common Core was common in public institutions. Some of my most recent students use Common Core in their subjects, so I am familiar with the layout and style.

Linear Algebra

I received my bachelors in Chemical Engineering and have work both in industry and academia using this discipline. I routinely helped in the lower level courses for discussion sessions and helped in research endeavors in the upper level courses. Math courses through differential equations were mandatory and necessary to perform as an engineer.
