About Michael

The most valuable educators set students up for success. This is what I do. My teaching style is active and inspirational, considering the mind not as a vessel to be filled, but a fire waiting to be lit!

I teach computer skills, digital photography, science and astronomy for students of all ages. My current university appointment is Adjunct Professor at the Academy of Art University AAU in San Francisco.

Original course designer and instructor of the first digital photography and astronomy courses offered at AAU; Basic Digital Photography, PH103 Digital Photography for Artists, Marketing for Photographers. Astronomy Exploring the Cosmos and Creative Astronomy for Visual Artists. Adjunct Professor and Tutor for BFA/MFA programs. Over 15 years of excellence in university teaching.

Avid Bay Area educational volunteer for organizations that improve our community and future: Boy Scouts of America, DCARA Deaf Counseling, Advocacy & Referral Agency, CSD California School for the Deaf, SF-SPCA San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, EB-SPCA East Bay Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Hobbies: Flying single engine aircraft, motorcycles, archery, ornithology and outdoor survival.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have years of university teaching experience working with special needs students; including those with ADD and ADHD. I have completed professional faculty development seminars towards the teaching of students with learning disabilities. I truly care about making a positive difference in the lives of my students. Astronomy

I have years of experience designing and teaching multiple college level astronomy classes at a fully accredited university.

My Scientific experience is comprised of 20+ years including: observational astronomy and research at local observatories and through The Tzec Maun Robotic Telescope Facilities in New Mexico and Australia. My research includes spectroscopy, stellar cartography, astrophotography, solar physics, and lunar phenomena.

My scientific education was completed at Kent State University.

Graphic Design

Fifteen years of experience creating high-end portfolio photography for graphic designers. Ten years of experience teaching graphic design majors how to shoot their own portfolios. Deep understanding of the graphic design field and what it takes to get you seen.

Hard Of Hearing

Fifteen years of experience working with the deaf as an educator of art, photography, science and business. I frequently work with the Deaf Counseling, Advocacy & Referral Agency (DCARA) designing and teaching workshops for the deaf and late-deafened. I am a member of the Technical Advisory Committee for the California School for the Deaf (CSD).

I have years of experience designing and teaching multiple college level photography classes as an adjunct professor at a fully accredited university. Commercial photography business experience, 20+ yrs. Primary focus, studio and location photography for ad agencies, design firms, client direct across the country. Clients of recognition have included Nestle, Intel, JC Penny, and Macy's. My formal education was obtained at Art Center College of Design.

Special Needs

I have years of experience working with special needs students; including those with learning disabilities and deaf groups/individuals. I have completed professional faculty development seminars towards the teaching of ESL students and those with learning disabilities. An inspiring tutor

My 7th grade son had his first session with Michael and it went very well. Michael is such a kind and patient teacher, and most importantly, in his first visit he inspired my son to want to learn. That is a real gift, as my son has ADD and a learning disability and has said many times that he hates learning because it's boring and too hard.
