I've been teaching full-time for three years, working with students of a remarkable range of dispositions, ability levels, and cultural backgrounds. I currently tutor test prep and writing to middle school and high school students in San Francisco.
The work has honed my ability to individualize instruction and develop engaging, effective curriculum. In Philadelphia, I instructed early literacy and math in a preschool classroom that was always erupting in minor crises, and I became an expert in locating the distractions, misconceptions, and emotional and physical barriers to students learning new material.
Since leaving that position, I've taught in calmer settings-- in Japan I instructed eight student English classes and tutored college students and adults. While the academic material in those classes was much more advanced, I found that the training I had received teaching preschool still applied: the game is to recognize the student's current base of understanding, root out its strengths and weaknesses, and build from that foundation. That system of individual recognition requires my alertness and constant willingness to adapt, but has huge benefits for the student.
In addition to my responsive disposition as a teacher, I have experience developing lesson plans for English reading, writing, and grammar at the Pre-K - 12 levels. As a teacher, I consider one of my greatest strengths to be developing creative lessons. I am interested in the process of learning and love to experiment with new pathways to reach the learner.

I'm working toward my Masters in teaching art now and having fun encountering creative curriculum ideas. In my own artistic work, I make paper sculptures and bind and illustrate my own books.
I have consistent experience with high-level academic and technical writing. Having received my undergraduate degree in English and tutored and taught ESOL and technical writing, I am a strong coach in mechanics, style, and content. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
