About Brandy

I started tutoring when I was in high school. As a junior and a senior I tutored other students in math such as algebra and pre-calculus and well as some biology. When I was in my senior year in college, I became a teaching assistant to conquer my fear of public speaking. At that point, I fell in love with teaching. I taught three courses over that year, trying to find new ways to help students with each progressive quarter. My biggest fear was not being able to help the students or not knowing all the answers. But I think the best thing about being an undergrad teaching assistant is the ability to relate to the students because not too long ago, you were in their shoes. With that mindset, I think I was much more well equipped to be able to help the students and empathize with their workload. It also gave me some insight on how to teach to their busy lifestyle.

I think my ability to connect with students makes me a great tutor. I won't just give out the answer, but I will do my best to provide the student with the tools to figure it out on their own, so that they can apply it to other similar problems. I also like to have fun with them and get to know them on a personal level so its not just another person teaching at them. I genuinely enjoy talking to my students and want to see them succeed, so I take it upon myself not only to teach them about science, but to teach them good study habits that can be applied across the board.

Please, I encourage you to contact me if you are looking for someone who loves science and will tailor lessons to each individual students based on how they learn.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

My senior year of college I worked as a teaching assistant for several classes including metabolic biochemistry, cell biology, and immunology. I was required to hold one section a week (up to 40 students) as well as plan my own lessons and hold 1 hour of office hours a week. Most of my students enjoyed my style of teaching as it was tailored to how they learned best and because they knew I had been in their position not long ago, making it easier for them to approach me with questions. I also have worked in labs for several years now, so I understand how to take the theory of biology and turn it into application.

6 Stars — I would give her six if I could. She was very knowledgeable and forced me to think about what I was learning. Brandy is a great teacher. ...
