About Edward

I have been teaching since I graduated from college 3 years ago through Teach for America. I was a founding teacher with elementary students (1st and 2nd grade) at a charter school, and, for the past year, I have taught 5th grade at an Oakland Unified School District school. While my teaching experiences have been with elementary students, I have also made an impact on middle and high school students through an Oakland Black Male Summit. The Summit brought together Oakland’s young black males, community partners and teachers. The summit sought to empower and uplift black male students by making them feel valued, building bonds of brotherhood, and providing models of opportunity and choice. I would love to continue that impact by tutoring high school, middle school, or college students.

I enjoy making connections with young people and helping them to realize their full potential. I firmly believe in what my parents, teachers, and other community members constantly told me, which is that you can do anything you set your mind to. I hope to be able to encourage and motivate young people to do their best and then celebrate their accomplishments.

English and history were my favorite subject subjects, along with public speaking as I participated in many oratorical competitions at my school and church. Growing up in a house with attorneys as parents, it was very important to be able to communicate your thoughts and points of view verbally and in written form. I also was an avid reader as a child and this translated into my successes in both test taking and in English class.

At Yale, I was a history major and if I were to pick a subject that I enjoyed most in school, it would probably be history. While fiction also interested me, I always felt incredibly inspired by the wonderful people and stories found throughout history.

Additionally, after graduating from college and moving to the Bay Area, I began acting in my free time and consider it one of my favorite extracurricular activities. As a teacher/ tutor, acting has helped me connect better with my students, make learning more fun, and come up with new and creative ways to teach lessons.

Please contact me if you would like someone who is going to get to know you and push you to be your best. I am looking forward to working with you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

Throughout my academic career, History was always my favorite subject. In high school, I excelled in History and was in two AP classes (European and American). I passed both tests. In college, I majored in History, but my senior essay focused on American religious history.

I have played organized basketball every year since I was in 2nd grade (a total of 14 years). In high school, I was the captain of the varsity team my senior year and led them to the best record in the school's history. In college, I was the president and captain of the Club Basketball Team for two years and led them to the best record in the team's history (over that two year period). I also was a paid counselor at a basketball camp for a few years in college.

Elementary (K-6th)

I was accepted into Teach for America three years ago and, through the program, earned my Multiple Subject/ Elementary School teaching credential. I taught for a few years as a founding 1st and 2nd grade teacher in a charter school in Oakland, CA. I also taught fifth grade for a year in Oakland Unified School District.

I excelled at English throughout out high school (passing the AP test and receiving A's in all classes), and I majored in History in college, which involved many of the same skills as the English major (I.e. Reading, analyzing, and writing essays). My specialty is tutoring the English sections of the SAT and ACT.

Public Speaking

From 2nd to 8th grade, I participated in and honed my oratorical skills in an annual competition at my elementary school. I won superior (the highest award) 5 out of the six years. In high school, I won a few oratorical competitions and debated nationally in Lincoln Douglas debate, after winning the state competition. In college, I was a paid commentator for the men's basketball and football teams. As an adult, I have taken over 10 acting classes and served as an understudy at Berkeley Repertory Theater.

As an OUSD teacher, reading was my primary focus in the classroom. This was wonderful for me because I have always loved to read and spent most of my elementRy life in a book. Having taught three grades, I have a sound understanding of how readers grow, major pitfalls in reading, and how to address reading issues at home.

Study Skills

In my high school studies and at Yale, I was able to maintain a good GPA while balancing sports, debate, and other extracurricular activities. After that, I taught three years in Oakland Unified School district and advised 1st, 2nd, and 5th graders on their study habits. Throughout high school and college, I participated in tutoring and mentoring programs and advised students on study skills.

Great Tutor!

Edward was extremely knowledgeable! He helped my daughter to analyze and outline an essay for her English class. We were grateful that he was able to meet with my daughter at the very last minute request. With his help, my daughter was able to turn in her paper on time. Thank you so much, Edward!
