I currently have a Master's degree in Clinical Psychology, and am only a few months from a Doctorate degree in the same. In the past few years, I have been working as a Clinical Psychologist, which as involved engaging clinically in a variety of settings including alcohol/substance recovery for men 18 and older, residential care facilities for the elderly with Dementia and other disabilities, community mental health for individuals of all ages who have depression, anxiety, relational issues, grief & loss, and other issues. Teaching and tutoring are some of my great passions: in the past I have worked with children in grades K through 12 on all subjects. I have given lectures in several graduate-level courses, and have given over 75 lectures at various non-profit institutions on a wide variety of subjects.
Tutoring and teaching is, for me, primarily to help the student connect and engage with the work in a way that accesses their innate curiosity and desire to learn. Many times we often get frustrated because of the need to get work done on time, memorize many things, and a whole bunch of other things that students often cannot see the point of. My teaching philosophy is to help students navigate these necessary (but often very aggravating) obstacles as quickly and compassionately as possible so as to help the student get to the real crux of learning: the desire to know more about oneself and the world, and to grow as a human being. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
