UC Berkeley (Economics)
Being a teenager is hard work these days. High school students are often overwhelmed by classes and extracurriculars and crunched for time. Getting the grades and test scores that will catapult them to college (and the world beyond) is a major stress point. That's where I come in!
My own great SAT scores took me to UC Berkeley, where I graduated with honors. I spent seven years working for premiere test prep companies, so I am well-trained in SAT/ACT techniques and have coached dozens of students to big score increases. I am especially effective working with students with test anxiety, a very common problem in taking college entrance exams.
I also tutor a wide range of academic subjects, breaking down concepts into bite-sized pieces and honoring the pace at which the student needs to work. Many students say I helped them finally grasp subjects they never understood in school, from coordinate geometry to pronoun use. I truly enjoy working with teenagers, so they tend to enjoy working with me, too. I meet with most of my students at my quiet home office in Oakland, which makes an ideal work environment.
I develop real rapport with students, helping them identify their goals and find internal motivation. Preparing for a standardized test can be a drag. But working from the student's own motivators makes the process painless! I don't just tutor kids to better grades and scores. I mentor them so they can reach their potential beyond the test.

That’s how my daughter describes Emma. My daughter was *very* opposed to having a tutor but, after her first lesson with Emma, without any hesitation she agreed to more sessions. Emma has a calm persona that translates into a non-stressful learning environment. This is imperative for my daughter who gets anxious and nervous when she stumbles as she perceives that she is being judged. This being said, Emma is firm and kept my daughter on track. After tutoring with Emma, my daughter’s scores *more than doubled* from the first to the last practice tests! We highly recommend Emma and, even though my daughter is finished prepping for the HSPT, she will continue tutoring with Emma to help her prepare for high school.
Emma worked on basics of Algebra, Geometry and Statistics to help me prepare for an upcoming SAT. She is very patient and knowledgeable. Emma really took the time to help me work on some concepts that had been confusing me. I can't wait for our next lesson!
I was very pleased with Emma. She made Casey feel very comfortable and more confident about taking the SAT test. Emma is experienced and can pinpoint the weak areas.
My Daughter had her first lesson with Emma and was very happy with her. She said that Emma really helped her learn the problems that she had in grammar and gave her the right information needed in prepping for the test.
Emma is kind compassionate and smart and has an excellent command of the material. She has a enthusiasm in teaching. I think that is very important for young people to learn.
Thank you so much for your service. Kattie really enjoys your attention to her. She likes that you ask about her day at school. She comments on it all the time. She understands the way you explain the lessons. Great Job!
I have found Emma to be very attentive to my daughter's needs with geometry tutoring. She really understands the topic and enjoys teaching and this learning process become empowering for my daughter as she gains more confidence. Emma is very kind, smart and patient which is a great combination of skills. I am very lucky to have such a capable teacher as Emma. She is a 10 in every way!!! Thank you !
My son's first ever SAT tutoring session, and he said he learned some things he didn't know already. Emma was very patient and knowledgeable.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been tutoring test prep for seven years and ACT math is something I particularly love to teach. As one who once struggled with math myself, I am able to understand where students tend to get stuck. Along my journey to mastering algebra and geometry I learned some great methods for understanding math. These techniques have proven very helpful for students who do not find math intuitive.
The Reading passages on the ACT present a tremendous timing & comprehension challenge for most students. Over many years of test prep tutoring I have developed successful strategies for maximizing accuracy within the time constraints.
Algebra is a tough subject for many kids. A student of mine once said, "Letters just don't belong in math!" As one who struggled with math in school myself, I am able to understand where students tend to get stuck. Along my journey to mastering algebra I learned some great methods for understanding it. These techniques have proven very helpful for students who do not find math intuitive.
Since I've had a lot of success as a test prep tutor, many families have requested that I also work with students on college application essays. This has given me the wonderful opportunity to help students express themselves effectively in writing so that they can get into their dream schools! I know how to bring out the best in student writing without stifling the student's own voice. As someone with much experience working for publications, I'm also a crack proofreader.
I specialize in test prep and have tutored high school entrance exams for several years. Eighth graders are usually new to such rigorous testing, so I try to ease them into the material gently. My HSPT/COOP/SSAT students see big score increases and often choose to continue working with me as they navigate high school.
When I was in school, English was my favorite subject. I'm passionate about reading and writing, and I think my enthusiasm is infectious. (Although my students occasionally tease me about it!) I have helped students with grammar, vocabulary, writing, reading comprehension and literary analysis. I have experience working with non-native English speakers as well.
I have worked with many students who just don't "get" geometry when they learn it in school. This is a subject that really benefits from one-on-one explanations. Each student's mind works a bit differently, and spatial reasoning combined with math can be very challenging. I tailor my teaching to that particular student's way of learning about new concepts like shapes, planes and axes.
Grammar is a specialty of mine, and my greatest nerdy passion. Because I enjoy it so much myself I am able to get students enthused about grammar in ways they never thought possible!
I have been tutoring test prep for seven years and SAT math is something I particularly love to teach. As someone who once struggled with math myself, I am particularly able to understand where students tend to get stuck. It took me many years to truly grasp algebra and geometry, and along the way I've learned a lot of great techniques for getting math concepts, useful for those who do not find math intuitive.
SAT Reading was the first subject I began tutoring back in 2006, so I know the material very well. This part of the SAT is unlike the tests students usually see in school, so it requires some adaptation and new skills. Timing is crucial to success in this section, so I always have my students first learn the techniques and then gradually build speed in working through passages.
I have been tutoring writing skills for five years, working with teens and adults on college application essays, school essays and professional cover letters. I encourage students to find their own written voices, helping them express themselves more effectively. I am also a great proofreader, spotting usage errors and explaining how to fix them.
