Berkeley Community College (ASL)
Ohlone College Interpreter Preparation Program (Enrolled)
I have a genuine love of teaching all ages to sign ASL. I look forward to opportunities to help level the academic playing field for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and help the hearing to navigate the road to ASL fluency, through tutoring.
I graduated with highest honors in Spring 2013 from Berkeley Community College (BCC,) but continue my study of American Sign Language and Deaf studies at Ohlone College. I am currently a 2nd year student in the Interpreter Preparation Program (IPP) at Ohlone.
My IPP studies include: mentor-ships with well respected members of the Deaf community in schools and social services, in-depth analysis of ASL and English discourse and hands-on interpreting skills. To work in schools I was required to pass a TB test, finish a 2-hour online course on child abuse and be fingerprinted by the Catholic Archdiocese of Oakland.
As part of my requirements to receive my AA degree in American Sign Language from BCC, I had the pleasure of tutoring at the California School for the Deaf. My duties included tutoring deaf and hard of hearing children ages 9 to 17 in English and math, assisting the director of the high school theater spring show and the head of the Culinary Arts Dept.
For the past 20 years, I have also taught dance. My experience teaching children includes working at many Bay area public and private schools including Lincoln High School, University High School, Lick Wilmerding and Potrero Hill Middle School (through San Francisco Arts Education where I am a board member).
Along with my experience as an professional actor, my work as a tutor and dance teacher gives me a unique perspective on the teaching process. My tutoring technique can include visual, written text, kinesthetic and aural approaches. I have a genuine love of teaching all ages to sign ASL. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
