Western Oregon University (ASL English Interpre)
I am a nationally certified sign language interpreter (RID CI/CT). I have a B.S. degree from Western Oregon University in ASL/English Interpretation. Over the course of my 18 years as an interpreter, I have worked in a variety of settings including PK-12, post-secondary, and community settings. I have taught ASL and Interpreting at the college level.
If you would like to improve your basic skills or practice the skills you have, I have to the tools. I am patient with new signers (after all, I was once a beginner too). I believe that most sessions should be done without using voice as this will put the student in the mindset to learn visually. Because ASL is a 3-dimensional, visual language, learning from a live person is better then learning from a book, plus it can be done anywhere!
The best way to begin learning is through formal classes (please contact me for a list of colleges that offer courses). These courses tend to be taught by native users. With my familiarity with a variety of curricula, I can supplement your learning by giving you another place to practice. If you are interested in working with me please respond with your goals and describe any sign skills you have. I look forward to helping you grow to love ASL as much as I do.
If you are an interpreting student, I can also provide mentoring. I have completed over 50 hours of mentor training and I can guide you through self-analysis and discovery, especially to determine what works for you. Please contact me with your goals for mentorship. I am a nationally certified sign language interpreter (RID CI/CT). I have a B.S. degree from Western Oregon University in ASL/English Interpretation. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am fluent in ASL and have worked in Deaf and Hard of hearing programs in PK-12 settings as well as post-secondary. I have tutored children in the public school setting for 6 years in a variety of subjects including English, Math, and ASL vocabulary. I am also a certified sign language interpreter.
