About Rebecca

Over the past 10 years I have gained a broad knowledge and experience in many different areas, both academically and culturally. I graduated from the University of California Santa Cruz with a bachelors degree in Psychology and the privilege of learning under amazing professors. Since graduation all of my positions have been in the realm of education.

My passion for travel, teaching and learning has brought me to several other countries. While living in South Africa I was blessed with the experience of working in the Lilliebloom Orphanage with girls ages 2 to 13. I most recently returned from South America, where I taught in a primary school in Ecuador, teaching English to kindergarteners through 5th grade as well as a yoga studio in Peru.

After graduating from UC, I worked for an organization that used “applied behavior analysis therapeutic techniques” to help autistic children and their families learn new ways to live and grow despite having a disorder that could not be cured.

I have worked in both public and private schools, all at an elementary academic level as a teachers assistant in a 3rd grade class, a co-teacher in a multi-level class, a substitute and trainer at a special day class primarily for children on the spectrum. Before relocating to Oakland, I had been working in a kindergarten classroom, primarily one-on-one with a student, however I also assisted with all the children in the classroom and the activities given.

I have been given the tools to enable me create fun, interactive lesson plans tailoring to the child's needs. No matter the subject or the difficulty, learning can be fun and I have been successful in finding ways to teach lessons in a different manner that children can grasp what they are meant to learn while enjoying it.

I am a firm believer in giving back and helping in a personal way to shape an equal opportunity for every child to learn and prosper. My rates are negotiable and I am more than happy to work out arrangements so that students who need help can get help.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Autism

I have worked with children who range from high to low on the autism spectrum for multiple years in multiple different settings. I have held positions in public schools with children who needed assistance in mainstream classrooms, co-taught in special day classes with children not in mainstream classes as well as one-on-one in home intensive therapy with children high on the spectrum. Some of my training includes applied behavior analysis, discreet trial teaching, best practices for each learner, and yoga for children.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been working in elementary classrooms since 2008, as a teacher aid, assistant teacher, co-teacher and English teacher to non-native speakers. My most previous work experience has been in a kindergarten classroom and my prior experience has been in 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade for general education and k-5 as an English instructor.

Fitness

My passion for health and fitness has led me to obtain multiple certifications in this field. These include my registered 200 hour Yoga certification, a specialized yoga training designed specifically for teaching children yoga, and a barre instructor. I have over two years experience creating and teaching classes to both children and adults.

Handwriting

In every classroom I have worked in I have focused on helping teach the various stages of handwriting. In my current position I am working with kindergartners; I am assisting with teaching them the foundations of handwriting and building upon that skill. In my previous positions with higher grades, I have worked with students who needed to go back and focus on different elements of writing, whether it be cursive, upper and lower case, legibility or other skills harder for some to grasp. I feel comfortable with my ability to help all grade levels with this skill.

Special Needs

After graduating with a degree in Psychology I began working with a company as an early childhood interventionist. I received considerable training in applied behavior analysis and direct trial teaching, as well as ongoing seminars and workshops, such as handle with care, on various aspects of working with children with special needs.

While working with Central Coast Kids and Families in the Monterey county school district I also was thoroughly trained in teaching and working with differently developing children. There were monthly workshops with different specialists who shared their techniques, knowledge and skills.
Since working in education, I have worked with children with special needs for a combination of over four years.

Yoga

I have been practicing yoga since 2007 as well as teaching in the more recent years. I am a certified yoga teacher, with my specialty in Vinyasa flow and Ashtanga.
