About Trina

I am a graphic designer & photographer with 20+ years of experience. Over the years, I have worked for a large, international corporation and on the other end of the spectrum, a small privately owned business. Eventually, I started my own 2-person design business in 2001 and continue my freelance business today on my own.

I received my Associates Degree in Graphic Design & Desktop Publishing in 1996. I design for both print & web; specializing in print. A large portion of my design work is branding, logo design and print collateral. I have a passion for clean design using typography, color and photography. I am most happy when I can take on a project that allows me to incorporate all of these elements. I have extensive experience using the Adobe Creative Suite of design applications. I recently made the jump to subscribing to the Adobe Creative Cloud (CC). It is very important to me that I keep up with industry standards.

Circumstances in life brought me from Chicago, Illinois to San Diego, California. I live with my daughter and help care for my grandson (with another one on the way). I currently handle freelance work through my old clients in Chicago, and stock photography for Getty Images. Being able to work for home and set my own hours works very well with my living situation. I now have the opportunity to work outside of the home and am very interested in sharing my knowledge and expertise with others. I am looking to tutor others in graphic design concepts in addition to the software applications used in design. I also possess a highly technical background so along with teaching about design I'd love to tutor others in the proper use of a computer in the design process. That includes understanding the operating system, file naming conventions, storage and organization. I have worked mainly in a PC environment but I am also skilled with the Apple operating system.

Finally, my main passion in life is photography. I have been able to turn my hobby into a paying gig by licensing my images through stock photography agencies. I license privately and through Getty Images. So I add photography to my tutoring list. What I want to offer is how to operate a DSLR camera and the associated workflow in getting an image from camera to computer to final file whether that be for sharing with family and social networks or in creating a digitally correct file for use in print & web design. Not only do I want to share the technical side of photography, I want to share the creative side. How to compose an image, how to make a visually pleasing image.

I have privately tutored many people of all ages over the years and look forward to meeting new people in San Diego and sharing my skills, my expertise and my passion for design and photography.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Illustrator

I received an associate of applied sciences in graphic arts/desktop publishing in 1996. I have been working steadily in the graphic design field ever since.

I am trained in taking an idea from concept to completion using current desktop publishing applications (InDesign & QuarkXPress) on both MAC & PC platforms. In addition to the desktop publishing application, I also use other Adobe Suite programs in my design work. That includes Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat and Dreamweaver.

More specifically, my Adobe Creative Suite experience involves: use of InDesign and Photoshop to create, design, and print various publications such as flyers, direct mail, brochures, posters, multi-page documents and reports; use of Illustrator to design brand identity systems, logos, info graphics and illustrations for placement in InDesign; use of Acrobat to design and publish interactive documents and forms; and the use of Dreamweaver to layout and design web pages using CSS, HTML and Javascript coding.

Adobe InDesign

I received an Associate of Applied Sciences in Graphic Arts/Desktop Publishing in 1996.

I have been using Adobe InDesign specifically since the first release to design, preflight and publish documents for print and for online content. I currently use InDesign in my freelance design business on both the MAC and PC platforms.

My InDesign experience includes the design of a variety of single page layouts including:

• Corporate identity branding systems (letterhead, envelopes, business cards, invoices)
• Direct mail and marketing collateral (postcards, flyers, brochures, trade publication advertisements)
• CD-ROM labels, tray liners and packaging
• Posters, banners, presentation boards, tradeshow graphics and displays
• Book covers

My InDesign experience also includes the layout and design of a variety of multi-page layouts including:

• Firm profile marketing brochures, statements of qualifications, reports and proposals
• Catalogs, programs, newsletters and books

Adobe Photoshop

20+ years using Adobe Photoshop in a graphic design workflow. This includes print & web graphic design as well as image editing, retouching and restoration. I also use Photoshop creatively for fine art photography and for stock photography. I am currently subscribed to the Adobe Creative Cloud so I am up to date on all the new features.

Desktop Publishing

I received an Associate of Applied Sciences in Graphic Arts/Desktop Publishing in 1996. I have been working steadily in the graphic design field ever since.

I am trained in taking an idea from concept to completion using current desktop publishing applications (InDesign & QuarkXPress) on both MAC & PC platforms.

My experience involves:

the efficient use of page layout software to create, design, and print various publications such as flyers, direct mail, brochures, posters, multi-page documents & reports

page layout & design incorporating the principles of design (contrast, repetition, alignment, proximity), spec'ing type and color selections

importing text, illustrations/graphics and images into the page layout program

creating master pages & stylesheets (character & paragraph level styles)

formatting text (typeface selection, kerning, leading, line spacing, hyphenation & justification, columns & gutters

focusing on consistency across pages and spreads with attention to detail

prepress operations, collecting for output; final preparation of publication for print or electronic delivery

Knowledgeable and patient tutor — I scheduled a two-hour tutorial with Trina to go over the basics of organizing and editing my photos using Adobe Lightroom. She arrived on time (early, in fact. I am pointing this out as a good quality.) and proceeded to teach me the ins and outs of Lightroom. I liked that she allowed me to 'drive' the lesson and was very thorough in her explanations. Trina did not hijack the mouse and keyboar ...
