About Joan

Teaching was my first love. I knew from freshman year in high school that teaching was the only career for me. My goal was to help people enjoy learning, believe that they could succeed and want to continue to inquire and explore. Nothing is difficult if taken in steps and with support.

Since I began my teaching career, my desire has been that my students believe that they can succeed. As a classroom teacher, I was always willing to meet with students outside of class and encouraged them to schedule a time for help, and of course, I would invite the reluctant students to a session. My tutoring has also consisted of paid positions. I tutored American/British/World Literature and composition, AP and SAT test prep and French in my home for students at my school and their siblings. All of the students were in middle or high school.

I especially appreciate the thrill of seeing the "light bulb go on." The best way to help students with that process is with private tutoring. Questions that students are reluctant to ask in class can be addressed out in a non-threatening setting. Additionally, I can provide students with methods for approaching their own teachers and helping themselves take charge of their own learning.

I have been a teacher for over 25 years and love sharing my passion for literature and composition with young people. The expertise that I have garnered is worthless unless it is extended to others.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I am a practicing Catholic with extensive experience teaching in a private, Cathoilc school. During my career, I have taught the Bible as literature, focusing on the values expressed along with the relationship to a person's way of life.

College Counseling

I served as Assistant Principal of Academics for over 20 years, guiding students in course selections, based on the requirements of the UC system. I also counseled students on college choices based on what would be a good fit for them, academically, morally and socially.

COOP/HSPT

As a former private high school principal, director of academics and teacher of English, I am very familiar with the level of academic achievement needed to qualify for entrance into a private school. I also have taught English for over 25 years and have taught courses in HSPT prep and tutored specifically for the HSPT.

Literature

I have experience teaching English literature for 35 years and love literary analysis.

Public Speaking

I taught public speaking for five years. Additionally, during my 25 years as a high school administrator, I wrote and gave speeches to audiences which included students, parents, colleagues and superiors.

I critiqued student graduation speeches and helped prepare students to speak formally to the entire student body.

Writing

I have taught composition, including writing for Advanced Placement exams. I have also taught American, British and World literature.

Loves to Teach- Undiscovered Gem- More than Qualified — I was slightly apprehensive before meeting Joan, as she didn't seem to have many other reviews on WyzAnt. It turns out Joan only relocated to NorCal a year or so ago to be near family, new grandchildren etc. Joan is a recently retired teacher and Principal from So Cal with 30+ years professional education experience. Joan is MORE than qualified to be your child's tutor. Joan is clearly tutoring no ...
