About Susannah

I am a former news reporter and grant writer with a B.A. cum laude in Classics from Harvard University. For almost 20 years, I have taught drama and creative writing for all ages in Bay Area public schools. I have also led workshops at UC Berkeley and UC Davis. I have done coursework in Teaching for Understanding with Harvard Graduate School of Education and in 2012 received a post baccalaureate Certificate in Writing from UC Berkeley. While working as
founding Artistic Director of an educational arts company, I edited 30 books of original poetry by students, and developed an award winning cross-disciplinary education program recognized for excellence by local civic organizations and the California Arts Council. In addition, I hold an English substitute teacher credential with the Oakland Unified School District. I received a perfect score in my English SAT exam and a top scores in grammar and writing in my CBEST exams (required for substitute credentialing).

My approach to teaching is based on years of experience teaching kindergarten children through senior citizens. I work with learners to find ways to make learning fun and interesting, to re-awaken natural curiosity. I have an in-depth knowledge of grammar, vocabulary and writing techniques: I use techniques practiced by the UC Berkeley English department for writing research essays, creative nonfiction or personal essays. I also teach how to analyze and interpret literature or poetry in ways that relate to real life. Most importantly, I work with students to "own" his or her learning, to understand the relevance of education both personally and professionally.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I am an expert in this area for several reasons. First, I teach voice: speaking and singing. I was the sole teacher/proprietor of a studio, which at its peak had 25 students a week. Several of my students were teachers whom I helped to improve their lecture delivery. Second, I am a writer and editor who has edited student writing for publication and taught writing in Oakland public schools. I hold a Certificate in Writing from UC Berkeley.

I am also a professional stage director and drama instructor, jobs that requires ability to coach students to project, express content expressively, articulate clearly, and engage listeners with variety of tone, pacing and facial expression. I also teach drama/acting for children and adults in schools and privately.

SAT Writing

*Two years tutoring SAT writing
*Former reporter, rewrite editor and radio editor for the Chicago City News Bureau
*Professional grant writing consultant for non profits since 1975
*Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Writing (2013), including writing technique courses taught by UC Berkeley English professors
*Former credentialed English substitute teacher Oakland Unified
*Recent coursework in Teaching for Understanding, Harvard Graduate School of Education
*B.A. Harvard University, cum laude, Classics

Voice (Music)

I have worked professionally as a singer and voice teacher for many years. I am a member of the American Guild of Musical Artist (currently inactive). My solo performance work includes: Chicago's Music of the Baroque concert series, Harvard Memorial Church Choir, SF Talent Bank, SF Symphony Chorus, Chicago Symphony Chorus, Berkeley's North Congregational Church, Bay Area Chamber Orchestra, and Opera Piccola.

I have studied voice for many years and am former owner of a local voice studio, and teacher of voice for actors classes in Chicago and the Bay Area. I also conducted several local choirs including Rockridge Methodist Church Choir and the Oakland Technical High School Choir/Vocal Ensemble. I currently offer private voice lessons in the East Bay.

Writing

I am qualified to teach writing because I am a professional, award-winning grant writer, former journalist and English teacher. I have a Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Writing from UC Berkeley and currently serve as grant writer for the Armenian Women's Archives and Actors Ensemble of Berkeley. Through my B.A. in Classics from Harvard University, I have an extensive background in grammar and linguistics. I have enjoyed helping many ESL students of all ages. Finally, I have edited or adapted more than 50 books of poetry and dramatic scripts in my career as an educator and theater artist.

Best Personal Statement Tutor!

Susannah helped me to revise my UC application's statement. She listened to me patiently and organized my thoughts clearly. At first, I did not know what I should write. However, she tried to understand who I am and I could come up with an idea of the essays. Also, since she was very friendly, I could easily share my personal challenges. She always made me reflect myself and I could write my stat
