UC Berkeley (Physics)
Thank you for reading my page. I am looking to tutor college and high school students in Physics and math. Recently, I have tutored several students in the Berkeley courses Physics 8A/8B and 8BX with success.
I have been teaching and tutoring students in Science and Mathematics since my graduation from UC Berkeley in 2006. My passion in life is learning. I love to learn most about physics and biology, but also enjoy learning music and languages. Right after graduating from college I decided to work as a teacher so I could transfer some of my excitement for the sciences to a younger generation. I have been teaching professionally and have earned a Clear California Credential in Physics, Biology and Multiple Subjects. I am also experienced in teaching English Learners and students with special needs.
My approach to tutoring and teaching is simple: help the student find a way to learn better by explaining the concepts in many different ways and going through many sample problems. Then I have the students teach the concept back to me. These methods have had proven results: for 4 years in a row, more than 90% of my physics students scored proficient or advanced on the California STAR Physics tests. Last year one of my students also scored 800 on the Physics SAT2.
My areas of strength are Undergraduate College Physics, Conceptual Physics, Honors/AP Physics, Precalculus, Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry and Biology Thank you for reading my page. Sam was very accommodating in finding a time to meet me on short notice before a homework assignment I was struggling with was due. He walked me through the problems and helped me feel more confident in my skills. I would highly recommend him as a physics tutor. He is incredibly patient and an excellent teacher.
I had an exam coming up so I met with Sam. I was having trouble with a few concepts and he was able to explain them through multiple approaches until I really grasped an understanding. The time I spent with him made a huge difference in my performance on the exam. Thanks Sam!
Sam is very patient and has a good way of explaining things. I missed a lot of lecture classes due to personal issues, and I felt a lot more confident that I can do well in my physics course after meeting with Sam only once. He also took interest in where, exactly, my class was in the syllabus and how grading/points are constructed - in order to best prioritize tutoring subjects and ways to go about solving the problems. Highly recommend.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught Advanced and Intermediate Algebra at the high school level since 2006 and am currently a College Algebra instructor. Most of my students at the high school level achieved a score of Proficient and Advanced on the CA state exams.
I have a B.A. degree in Physics from UC Berkeley and am currently a Masters of Science in Physics student at SFSU. I have taught Physics in the CA schools full-time since 2007 and have a Clear Professional Physics Teaching Credential in California.
I am a native Russian speaker and have studied Russian at my grade school in Moscow from the age of 6 to 14. I speak Russian with my family all the time and read prose and newspapers in Russian. I have done some translating for Russian-only speakers in the past and am looking forward to helping students learn the Russian language.
