I have a passion for tutoring and for providing academic support to students K-12th grade. In the past, I have had experience working in after school programs tutoring students k-3rd grade in all subjects, and most recently have worked with high school students, including students with special needs. During my time at UC Berkeley, I volunteered a couple of hours a week at the writing center helping out other fellow peers with some of their papers for subjects within the majors of Sociology, Social Work, Anthropology and English Literature. While working on my degree, I also spent six months in Argentina (my native country) studying abroad, and got to expand my tutoring skills further by working with people of all ages and walks of life as an English Instructor. I primarily worked with students 6th-12th grade and college students (ages ranged from 18-50).
In addition to academic support, I focus on developing successful study/homework skills. Organization and prioritization are just as important as understanding the content of the subject of study. I provide tips and guidelines as to how to approach a project, understanding what it entails--what one is being asked to do, and seeing it through until completion. I believe that embracing healthy study skills will not only make the subject a bit easier to tackle, but also help a student develop more self confidence in their work and ability.
My academic areas of strength include English (writing/reading/grammar), Spanish (I am a native speaker), and World History (with an emphasis on US history). In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have experience working with high school students diagnosed with autism on all subjects, with an emphasis on English (developing critical thinking skills, vocabulary & grammar), Spanish 1-4, US History, Government and Politics. I have eight years of experience in public speaking skills. Public speaking relates to preparing information to be presented in front of an audience. My experience entails numerous hours of public speaking - presenting work in an office/professional work environment (PowerPoint presentations) as well as in an educational setting (presenting my own written work in lectures). As a tutor, I would prep a student with different techniques and methods to help develop effective presentation/communication skills. Some of these techniques include: reading out loud, expanding vocabulary, recording & playback, and practicing in front of a mirror. In my previous role as an English Instructor, I helped many students overcome fears about public speaking by developing fun exercises and working in different techniques to promote effective public speaking and presentation skills.
I have experience working with elementary and middle school aged children in developing reading and English comprehension skills. My method includes establishing monitoring comprehension-an assessment that allows me to see what children do and do not understand from a passage that is given to them to read, incorporating metacognitive strategies to teach students how to think about and have control over what they read, using graphic and semantic organizers to teach children how to organize the ideas being read, summarizing passages, and encouraging the ability to generate and answer questions based on the reading. All of these methods combined have proven to be very effective in helping children further develop reading and English comprehension skills.
I am a native Spanish-speaker. While in high school, I enrolled in a native Spanish class in order to reinforce what I already knew, as well as refresh my grammar skills. Since college, I have tutored in Spanish on and off. In the past two years, I have tutored one to three students at a time in high school and college level Spanish courses.
I have several years of experience developing effective study skills. I have incorporated different methods and techniques in my own academic career, as well as with the students I have tutored throughout the years. Study skills entail learning time-management, how to be better organized, how to prioritize, how to create outlines/notes for written work and overall how to stay focused on any one given project and seeing it through until the end--staying focused on the process.
