About Lara

I am an enthusiastic tutor with lots of experience working with people of all ages. I have previously worked as a preschool teacher, an after-school teacher, and tutor of nearly every academic subject, with a particular emphasis on linguistic subjects--reading, writing, vocabulary and grammar. My B.A. is in French, and I have studied abroad at the Institut Catholique de Paris and lived in Paris long term. I also speak fluent Russian and Spanish, and have studied at the Smolny Institute in St. Petersburg and Moscow State University. I am available to tutor any of these languages, as well as general academics.

My teaching style is geared toward the individual student's learning style. I am very patient, and have the ability to explain things in many different ways, which helps with students who may be struggling in the classroom. I believe that learning should be fun, and I have plenty of games and exercises that help make academics enriching and fun for the student. I have some experience with children who have special learning needs, and I would be more than happy to discuss the child's needs with the family prior to beginning tutoring.

A tutor can be a very valuable resource to a family as well as to a child, as the one-on-one aspect of a tutoring session can provide insight into specific issues that a busy teacher in a classroom often cannot. Thus, I consider it an honor to tutor, and to have the singular ability to hone in on strengths and challenges in order to assist the child in being all that he or she can be.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
