About Kylen

I've loved history since as long as I can recall. And studying it from an early age allowed me to see past the piles of facts, dates and details to see how history relates to so much else. My college was part of a 5-College-Consortium allowing the students of the five schools to take classes at any of the member institutions. I was thus able to study early American history under Pulitzer and National Book Award-winner Joseph P. Ellis (before he won those awards, by the way), and the US Civil War under Stephen B. Oates, who also sat on my thesis committee. A few years after receiving my BA in American Studies I conducted original, primary research in the Smithsonian's Musuem of American History regarding Presidential inaugurations for a 20-page historical preface to the official book of President Bill Clinton's second inauguration. I also enlisted famed TV documentarian Ken Burns to write the intro for the book (an achievement rendered somewhat easy by our sharing our alma mater)!

I've spent most of the last 16 years as a professional writer and editor, covering pop culture, music and technology for, among others, the Village Voice. While my daughter was still a baby I took a break and taught reading and literacy for a year, continuing to tutor for a while before returning to editorial work in the dot com sector. But teaching - and any of the many subjects related to history - is my passion.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I received my BA in American Studies from Hampshire College, located in Amherst, Massachusetts; its being part of the 5-College-Consortium allowed me to take classes with preeminent U.S. History scholars Joseph Ellis (at Mt. Holyoke College), and Stephen B. Oates and Stephen Nissenbaum, (both at UMass Amherst) from whom I earned A's across the board. As an assistant book editor I prepared a 20-page historical intro for the official book commemorating U.S. President Bill Clinton's 2nd inauguration, which I researched in non-public archives of the Smithsonian's Museum of American History. I achieved the highest score on the AP U.S. History exam, and I received the "Outstanding AP US History Student" award for my high school.

Government & Politics

I got into studying our government in high school: the summer between sophomore and junior year I did a 3-week course at Georgetown University being taught by professors, with meet-&-greets with members of the government around Washington, D.C. In college, my major in American Studies included a lot of coursework directly about our government and politics, from the sources to the interplay today with media. I also got to work on the official book of President Clinton's 2nd inauguration.
