Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

In addition to earning state certification as an Instructional Specialist, the prevalence of students with ADD/ADHD caused me to seek additional training to better serve them. I have benefited by peer reviewed materials and seminars offered by the medical community as well as psychologists. It has motivated me to increase the range of instructional technique and method to have multiple points of entry, address different learning styles, and as engage interest while providing reinforcement of material taught.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

After working with numerous students with Autism and Aspergers, I sought state certification and undertook a course at SFSU that earned it. I am currently employed at a non-public school for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders, and work with a wide manifestation of the spectrum, requiring a fine tuned instructional approach to balance students' academic acumen with the emotional disturbance that attends the disorder. Effective motivational systems are key.

Business

Although I hold a degree, Master of Science in Economics, I learned the most about business over 15 years in finance, as a lending and private investment officer, securities trader and business analyst working in Fortune 100 financial institutions. I was Director/Volunteer of a Business Incubator in the US Peace Corps Business Development Group in Bulgaria, advising embryonic business ventures in business practices and ethics. Additionally I earned a Certificate as Instructor of Entrepreneurialism from the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship. In a middle school, I taught a seminar on Entrepreneurship and students determined service and product needs and wants in the student community, made business plans and executed initial steps in the formation and implementation of their small business venture's plan.

Elementary (K-6th)

As a Learning Specialist, I am certified to teach this age and grade group. I have 12 years experience with K-8 students in public and private schools working as a Resource and Learning Specialist across all core subject areas. I have found that in these years, instruction of learning techniques, methods and strategies is as important than the content of respective discipline. I have also studied to learn additional methods of instruction by taking Making Math Real, Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes, Reading Revolution, etc., to perfect my practice.

Elementary Math

Qualified Elementary Mathematics

I am credentialed as an Educational Specialist in Instruction and have worked in elementary and middle schools for the 14+ years of my teaching career. In that time, I taught mathematics (as individuals or in small groups), as a regular part of the curriculum that my students were required to master. Additionally, I undertook training in Making Math Real to improve my instructional methods. Lastly, my undergraduate and graduate degrees were in the field of economics and passed sufficient mathematics courses that utilized the concepts and skills taught in elementary + mathematics.

Phonics

I have taken several phonics courses at university as well as with private vendors and received certification to instruct in those programs, (First Focus Phonics; LiPs with Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes, Reading Revolution). I employ methods, techniques, strategies and use any materials from them in my practice as determined by the student's level, ability and need. I try to avoid books with pictures of the words and show pictures only after the sound, syllable/s are comfortably reproduced through reading and sounding letters, digraphs, etc., only. Sight words are introduced after mastery over basic phonics logic is established to build confidence in the reader.

For example, an ADHD student will respond well to changing modalities of instruction from writing with/without color, air writing, while sounding out letter sounds, even with a bit of a rap to engage interest. As possible, I use articles to reinforce meaning and relevance to each sound/symbol and pattern, reinforcement made with rhyme and rhythm.

Reading

I am trained in Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes, Reading Revolution and Orton Gillingham.

Special Needs

Through coursework, I received California state Credential TC3 Instructional Specialist that allows me to instruct students aged K-22 years, with a broad range of special learning needs, {auditory, visual, motor processing; ADD?ADHD, dyslexia), and I also am university certified to instruct students with Aspergers Syndrome and on the Autism Spectrum of Disorders. I have 14 years experience with such students of all ages, especially those K-8th grades, culture and ethnicities, linguistic background.

Specialized training in instruction has made me an effective teacher, and every experience has seasoned skills to allow me to quickly ascertain your child's area of need and employ appropriate combination of method and technique, and using their unique intelligence as the way to effectively perform in the given assignment, task, area of study or endeavor,

The individual experiences with each student and helping them to discover what is in them and how to best grow it is what delights my practice! I look forward to working with your bundle of potential!

Study Skills

As a learning specialist, I have long worked with students with particular focus on study skills. Such attention begins in the identification and management of effective executive functions that surround the time and space of study, and continues with effective study methods for the learning to be mastered. Skill development and strategies of study are determined by discipline (subject), the task, and the performance of learning (writing, analysis, calculations, etc). For example, in the mastery of expository texts for quiz or test, one might first review the structure of information given by examining key vocabulary, noting the author's definition of important information through headings, examples, photographs and graphs and/or charts and continue to clarify more in depth information offered in each area.
