It is my belief that every student of any age wants to and can learn. I feel that my responsibility as a tutor is to find ways to design, support, reflect upon, and evaluate learning opportunities that are meaningful for each individual. Consideration of a student's unique learning style is essential, as is an opportunity for a student to reflect upon not only what they have learned but also the process through which they learned it.
I always start out by talking with a student and with her or his family about what is going well and about what goals they have. Every student has so many strengths, and I feel that focusing on the success that is already taking place is one of the most powerful approaches to supporting students in their areas of growth. I am very familiar with a wide variety of learning styles and differences. I consider these things, along with information that I get from students and families, and make a plan for not just what a student needs to learn but how they will most easily learn it. I think communication and partnership between a tutor, a student, and the student's family is essential for student success.
I've been a classroom teacher for over a dozen years and a tutor for about half that time. Working with a whole class is an extremely rewarding experience, but I find that one thing I miss during the school day is the chance to connect with students individually as much as I would like to. Tutoring gives me the chance to do that, and I love the opportunity to support students as they become more and more successful with things that might have been challenging for them in the past. I've tutored elementary, middle, and high school students in a wide variety of subjects and know that every time I take on a new student, I myself will learn more through the process of teaching them. I'm still in touch with many of my former tutoring students and love hearing about the academic success they're experiencing now, in some cases many years after our work together. It's so exciting!
I am knowledgeable, experienced, organized, patient, flexible, and positive. I love kids and I love learning. I believe every student is successful in many different ways, and I am able to help bring success in areas that may have proved challenging in the past. It is my belief that every student of any age wants to and can learn. I feel that Sarah is a Godsend, for Gaspard and for all of us. He awaits his lessons with playful anticipation and he loves having her here. There has never been one single moment when he hesitates when it comes to lesson time. His English has improved in all ways - comprehension, pronunciation, stamina, understanding. I myself look forward to Sarah coming. She now feels like part of our family and I wouldn't have it any other way. She is also extremely considerate, gracious, articulate, fun-loving and kind. What else could we have hoped for? Thank you Sarah.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
