About Sarah E

I have been a Reading Intervention Teacher for elementary and middle school students as well as a Full-Time Classroom Teacher for first grade and fifth grade. Previous to that, I worked as an Interventional Specialist for Resource students and an Educational Aide. I have worked with students of all ages, races, and backgrounds. I have extensive experience providing individualized instruction and academic intervention support. A high percentage of my students received special education services and/or other similar support. I have a Clear Multiple Subject (Elementary) Teaching Credential from California State University - East Bay. I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology with an emphasis in Criminology and a minor in Spanish.

I love being around and interacting with young people, especially in educational settings. The positive, playful, and curious energy of young people constantly renews my own energy and motivation and inspires me. I enjoy getting down on their level and experiencing the excitement that they experience when they are learning. I have the patience and energy for the time and hard work it takes to be effective in teaching and mentoring the youth. I have worked with people of all ages in educational settings for over 15 years. I am organized and effective in how I support students. I am able to quickly identify the strengths and weaknesses of students and determine the best way to provide academic support. I am able to explain and re-explain academic concepts in different ways in order to allow different types of learners to understand. I know how to motivate and build confidence through setting goals in kid-friendly language and coming up with fun ways to track their progress. I know how to collect and analyze data in order to make the best placements for students. One of my biggest strengths is that I have the ability to make lessons relevant and applicable to the students' lives. I have excellent communication and problem-solving skills for collaborating with other teachers and parents. My strongest academic areas for tutoring are Basic Math, Prealgebra, Algebra 1, Phonics, and Elementary Reading and Writing.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Basketball

I played basketball for over 15 years and still play on occasion. I have 15 years of experience working with young people and know how to break down concepts into smaller steps. I've helped several young people with their basketball skills.

I have provided reading support to young people since 1999. In all of my educational positions. I have built the literacy skills of all of the young people that I have worked with – some in paid positions and some in volunteer positions. About half of the students in this class had Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
