About Cameron

I am a math and science teacher and tutor. I have tutored hundreds of students in Algebra to Multivariable Calculus, Differential Equations and Linear Algebra and in Statistics, Physics and Astronomy. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Astrophysics from the University of California, Santa Cruz. I believe learning should be fun, inspiring and intuitive!

I like to teach students in a comfortable environment, in which they can relax, stay concentrated and apply themselves to the material in a way that makes intuitive sense. I pride myself on adapting to each and every student's intellectual needs and learning style.

Math can be difficult! Especially when exposed to new material for the first time. While studying astrophysics at UC Santa Cruz, I found that repetition, relaxation and a stress-free learning environment were key to my success in learning new mathematical concepts.

I look forward to scheduling a session with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

Many years of math and science test taking, including ACT, SAT, GRE.

Algebra 1

Algebra (1 and 2) are fundamental to understanding any science at the college level. I like to think and teach math in intuitive terms, because it really is intuitive. In our learning sessions we will take many varying perspectives on the questions that are hanging you up and find an intuitive way to arrive at the answer.

Algebra 2

The material taught in Algebra 2 is essential to understanding almost any science at the collegiate level. Algebra 2 concepts arise naturally in the fields of astronomy, physics, mathematics among others. Taking a step back and using intuition has helped me master Algebra 2. I look forward to showing others the beauty of algebra and fundamental mathematics that are both fun and enjoyable to understand.

Astronomy

I have tutored hundreds of students in introductory astronomy. I've covered concepts about our solar system, about our Milky Way Galaxy and about the universe (known as "the Cosmos"). I really enjoy thinking about Astronomy and discussing the vastness of the universe, as well as the relevant topics like our Sun and solar energy.

Calculus

Calculus is often the first "heavy duty" math class one encounters.
I have tutored many students new to calculus and have received high praise for making the material easy to understand.
Calculus is an extremely useful tool for anyone wishing to apply their knowledge and seek the answers to interesting questions in many subjects such as: biology (population growth and predation), chemistry (chemical reaction rates and species abundance), physics (trajectories, vector fields), astronomy (nuclear fusion and supernovae), cosmology (evolution of the universe), and much much more.

Differential Equations

I studied differential equations while completing my BS in Astrophysics at the University of California, Santa Cruz. I've had to solve differential equations in many advanced courses.

In addition, differential equations are an extremely important concept in all of the physical sciences (physics, chemistry, biology, etc.) and although seemingly daunting at times, the techniques used to solve them can be broken down and learned by anyone with the desire to learn them.

Fortran

I learned Fortran while I was a research intern at NASA. I wrote an original subroutine which calculates the opacity caused by gas and vapor in the protoplanetary disk, billions of years before the Earth was formed.

Fortran is very intuitive. With a little help managing resources, syntax and problem solving, any student can confidently program in FORTRAN. I hope to provide that help to those interested!

Geometry

Geometry arises in many problems in math, and beyond.
I have tutored many students in Geometry and I personally like to present real world examples where Geometrical concepts arise in solving physics problems (and much more).

German

While a junior in high school I studied abroad in Germany, where I learned to speak, read and write German.
I went on to study German while in undergrad which culminated in taking a German Literature course (taught exclusively in German).
I am happy to teach introductory German speaking, read and writing skills with the possibility of continuing to intermediate and advanced skills.

Linear Algebra

I took Linear Algebra while studying for my B.S. in Astrophysics at the University of California, Santa Cruz. I did well in the course, and I have used key results and techniques (i.e. Eigenvalue problems, Matrices, Tensor manipulation) presented in the course throughout my studies. I am well versed in the subject matter and feel confident in my ability to help students master it themselves.

Physics

I hold an Bachelor of Science in Astrophysics from the University of California, Santa Cruz, one of the world's leading research institutions in the field of Astrophysics.

Precalculus

Precalculus is essential for students interested in college level math.
The subject mater is essentially algebra, geometry and trigonometry all wrapped in one. I have tutored many students in Precalculus who have gone on to take calculus and done well.

SAT Math

I have many years of math and science test taking experience including SAT and GRE.

Soccer

I'ved played soccer all my life, since I could walk.

I've played on casual, and competitive teams from the age of 5, up until attending university.

While a teenager my club team often competed in California state tournaments, in San Diego, California.

I enjoy playing soccer at every level. It's a great way to maintain fitness, practice coordination and enjoy time with friends.

Today I mainly play casually with friends, at home, and at the park. Occasionally we combine groups with others and scrimmage, until we are all exhausted!

Trigonometry

I used Trigonometry in many physics courses while earning my B.S. in Astrophysics at UC Santa Cruz. The concepts taught in Trig are extremely important for future math and science courses.
