Brent had the challenge of two students - one in 8th grade math and one in high school geometry. He came totally prepared for both of them, and because of how he connected with them, they were both willing to work with him. This was the first lesson and we will see how it continues (the older student is ADD and has associated learning challenges), but overall I was very happy with this first lesson.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I passed the CBEST over 10 years ago in order to secure my Professional Clear Credential. Moreover, I have been a middle school math teacher for the past 12 years. I tutor math during the year -- after hours -- and I do stay current in terms of writing skills as I currently am in a Masters program.
Although I have been a 6th-8th grade math teacher for over 12 years, I nonetheless have had a good amount of experience working with lower elementary-grade students. I specialize in math; however, I have taught reading comprehension and vocabulary to 3rd through 5th grade students. My style brings humor and patience to tutor sessions. Also, I integrate iPad and Internet resources to enhance learning. Most important, I continue to seek training in the new Common Core math standards, which will be taught starting this school year.
I currently teach 6th-8th graders here in Novato and am especially effective at teaching the new Common Core math standards with strategies that simplify the learning process. Moreover, I use IPAD/internet resources to enhance the learning experience. I'll meet tutees either in home or at a local mutually agreed upon location.
I am starting my 13th year of service as a Middle School math teacher wherein I've taught 6th-9th grade levels of math. Moreover, I have a great degree of writing and editing skills, and still assist students on my campus with their reports. During my tenure, I have had success conditioning my students to develop study skills in terms of note - taking, reading comprehension and test preparation. Further, I myself keep current on being a student as I am 70% through a Masters/Credential program (with a 4.0 GPA) at National University. Lastly, I utilize IPAD and Internet resources in my class and show students how they can use these tools to keep organized and to stay ahead of class assignments.
